Yeah, but remember that great save he made on Ryan's breakaway on Saturday? What a great save.
If he doesn't make that save, they would have lost 6-2.

Goalies (1): $4.5M
Buyouts (2): $1.633
Total cap (17): $72.085M
About $10M in space, and they need to sign 5 forwards and a goalie.

For clarity...
The 9 forwards: McDavid, Drai, RNH, Luc, Spoon, Kassian, Brodziak, Yama, Cave
The 7 D: Sekera, Klef, Larsson, Russell, Nurse, Manning, Benning

I actually can't believe this is true. I'd say that is an overpayment by about 2 mil per. For a team that is having such cap issues you'd think they'd have tried to squeeze every last dollar out... and you'd think this would've been an easy one, it's not like Koskinen has much leverage or pedigree to point to. I love this season more and more every day.

Cut them some slack. Koskinen is a young up-and-coming rookie goaltender in the league just about to hit his prime. They are paying for potential. It's not like they gave this contract to a 30+ year old goaltender.

Rittich is an RFA. That is going to matter here.
I thought it was 4.5 for all 3 years when I heard it on the radio...cannot believe 4.5/year. I have to believe that Katz junior just rewatched the behind the back catch highlight on replay all weekend and wanted an early birthday gift for his collection...

Including this season, they have committed $16M to Koskinen.
He has 16 wins.

Oilers will have something like $5.8 in cap space next year. They have to re-sign or replace PullRV, Reider, Chiasson, Khaira, Talbot.
They will also be carrying contracts for 8 dmen, counting Jones. Or Bouchard if he's called up. After Jones, they are paying every D over $1.9M, and 4 guys making $4M plus (with Nurse close behind and needing a new contract in 2 years).

Damn, sucks for us though, Rittich can easily point to this as a comparable.
####ing up everyone's cap structure with Draisatls ridiculous deal wasn't enough Edomonton? Need to screw up everyone's goalie deals too?
Christ if that team can't go ten minutes without screwing themselves over, at least stop doing it to everyone else

This is nothing remotely like the Turek mid-season extension. Turek was one season removed from winning the William Jennings Trophy, had already played two full seasons as a NHL starter, and 21 playoff games in two years.
Mikko Koskinen has played 31 NHL games. IN TOTAL.

UFA vs. RFA. If it were to get to arbitration, Koskinen could not be used as a comparable. And, as noted, Treliving has guys like Matt Murray to use as well.

Think of it this way, this contract maybe screws Calgary a bit because Rittich is going to post better numbers and want more money.

Chia must have googled "Finnish goalie Mikko K" but accidentally clicked on "did you mean: Finnish goalie Miikka K" when he was looking up his stats for negotiation.

I hope when Rittich's agent brings up Koskinen's new contract, Trelving lets him know that it is widely understood that any contracts given out by the Oilers are "derp" contracts that have no bearing on real NHL market value and should be discredited as early and often as possible.
Then put the bug in his ear that Chia wears a helmet when he manages his money. He even puts his own stickers on it.
