So why is the Saudi government's reaction so different than when Freeland critized them over their lackluster human rights? You would think based on past experience, they would be pulling their money out of the US and EU and recalling their diplomats and students studying abroad. It doesn't even seem like they're trying to save face here at all.

Because Erdogan keeps trolling them with the information trickle. Basically letting them build a lie to information and then releasing information to contradict it and make them look stupid. Hard to try and act all pissy and righteous when you're getting dominated.

Erdogan is playing them perfectly. Unfortunately it’s not in the name of justice, it’s about leverage to get something from SA. Like Erdogan gives a rat’s ass about journalists....

I have to say I am surprised with the speed and effectiveness of the Turkish Police.

A little bit of me wonders if they new about this and then pulled a double cross.

Turkey and Saudi Arabia have traditionally been rivals for influence in the region. It's likely the consulate and communications were already under heavy surveillance and they may have just let the plot carry out to weaken SA.

Each piece of new evidence seems to reveal a whole other level of incompetence. It's quite shocking, as SA has huge financial resources. You'd think they'd be able to pull off something a lot more sophisticated.

Saudi Arabia is absolutely the best argument against nepotism and hereditary rule. This pink panther level of stupidity is only possibly when you have multi-generational institutionalized incompetence in leadership.

Competence isn't their forte. It's why so many expats have to bring expertise to their industries.

According to the Daily Oil Bulletin, the Saudi's signed over $50 billion worth of contracts at the investment conference today. Some companies include Trafigura, Total SA, Hyundai, Norinco, Schlumberger, Halliburton and Baker Hughes.

Saudi Aramco said it had signed agreements with 15 international partners worth more than $34 billion.

The money is still talking.

Of course it is.

Not to sound crass, but what do you expect those companies to do? Not take the billions in contracts?

Yeah, until our own Canadian government cancels the multi-billion dollar Light Armored Vehicle contract we have with the Saudis, we can't look down our noses at any multi-national corporation taking on similar contracts.

Nope. I had no expectation like that at all. At the end of the day, there's money to be made and like it or not, KSA is a big time player.

Just thought it was interesting that the media has played this out to be a boycott of sorts, when in reality it's business as usual.

Saudi Arabia's top prosecutor announced Thursday he's recommended the death penalty for five people charged with ordering and carrying out the killing of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

I'm not sure this is what the rest of the world meant when we said we wanted justice here...Oh sure, go murder a few more people then! Well done Saudi...

Could you imagine being those guys? You get ordered to go do this killing by the king, and if you don't follow orders your life as you know it would be over. So you follow through, then get thrown under the bus by your king, and are going to get hanged for it. What a great country!

Are they hoping that the more confusing and convoluted the explanation they give that the rest of the world will just shrug their shoulders and move onto something else?

I'm so happy Energy East wasn't killed by Quebec politicians and now supplies our eastern refineries with Canadian oil instead of buying crude from this backwards illiberal regime.

Saudis do love executing people. The more the merrier in their weird part of the world.
