The Avs must absolutely love this. If there was ever any doubt that they'll get a top 5 pick in 2019, it's gone now.
Tierney is a solid piece, but if that's the core piece coming back for your Norris Trophy winning defenseman ... ouch. How does Dorion have a job in this league?

I don't think it's an awful deal. Tierney and DeMelo are both solid, a 1st is key, a 2nd is solid, and those are two of their top 5 prospects. The conditions on the two extra picks are unknown too so those could be valuable if they're tied to Karlsson re-signing.
Maybe the equivalent of us giving up a 1st, 2nd, Jankowski, Kulak, Rasmus, and Mangiapane? Plus two conditional picks. Anytime you can get 8 pieces for 2 (plus cap space), that's not horrendous for a team obviously rebuilding and you're trading a player who vocally wants out.
The only way I'm ok with this is if San Jose gets FLEECED. Please Dorion do the right thing.
Ottawa, if they are smart, is looking for roster guys with term, picks, and prospects. So looking at the SJ roster, presumably it will be some kind of mix of:
Prospects
Tmo Meier - F
Ryan Merkley - D
Antti Suomela - F
Josh Norris - F
Dylan Gambrell - F
Mario Ferraro - D
Picks
San Jose 2019 Picks - 2nd, 2nd(FLA), 3rd
San Jose 2020 Picks - 1st, 2nd, 3rd
San Jose 2021 Picks - 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Roster players
Chris Teirney - F - $2.95mil/2 years
Justin Braun - D - $3.8mil / 2 years
Joonas Donskoi - F - $1.9mil/ 1 year
And if I had to armchair GM this I would go with
Justin Braun
Ryan Merkley
Antti Suomela
*San Jose 2019 2nd* Becomes 2020 1st if Karlsson re-signs with San Jose
Chris Tierney (40 pt C, 24 years old)
Dylan DeMelo (25 year old defensive Dman)
Josh Norris (2017 1st rounder),
Rudolfs Balcers (2015 5th rounder),
2020 1st,
2019 2nd,
2 conditional picks.
I saw one unverified claim that the conditional picks are:
- a 2021 2nd which can become a 1st if the Sharks re-sign him and make the finals - a 2021 or 2022 1st if Karlsson plays for an Eastern team this season
bahaha if this is true, it's absolutely hilarious, and proves that Dorion is taking a lesser return just to keep Karlsson out of the East.
This trade is why I’ve said a few times that BT needs to get in on trading with Ottawa. Some said flames would have to deal valimaki a first parsons Brodie and/or Bennett. This return is nowhere near what was being said. BT needs to go after Stone. Might take Jankowski and a 2nd considering who he’s trading with
It's hard to believe it's so bad. I thought even if they got Meier they got boned and they didn't even.... how could no other NHL team be willing to do better than that?

Jesus, that's barely more than we paid for Hamonic. Dorion is bad at this.
This is for one year of Karlsson. Hamonic was acquired with three years on a deal with a very manageable cap hit.
It is a small but important point.
As far as fans concerned about how good this makes the Sharks, to be the best you have to beat the best. The Sharks may have improved their chances of winning the Pacific Division, but it is still WIDE open as far as I am concerned.

Oh... oh dear. It seems you were on a lag.
I'm sorry for your loss.
If it's any consolation, what you were hoping for is what I was more or less expecting.
