To be clear, I don't drink like I did in my 20's and early 30's. At one point I was drinking every night to get drunk.
Now I am 46, I start to think about what, when and how I drink. I am going to have a dry September, not because my drinking affects my life/work/parenting, but because I guess I want to see how a month of not drinking will affect me.
I was a binge weekend drinker on the weekends in my 20s. Maybe I drank to deal with shyness.
I drank less in the 30s as my hangovers got worse. In my 40s I would get a hangover on 3-4 drinks. In my 50s it only takes 1-2 drinks. I have too much I want to do to be hungover on the weekends. Maybe I have an allergy to alcohol? Now I only have a drink on special occasions like a birthday party. I'm not sure what to tell my wine club in the Fall. I think they will be okay with me just enjoying fine food.
I'm interested in using edible cannibas when it becomes legal, but probably not in a social setting.
Is it worse than the diet most people eat? I highly doubt that if someone likes to enjoy a few beers every now and then it will have such a huge negative affect on their health. At some point a lot of what we eat and drink is unhealthy.
Have any of the grocery stores actually started carrying wine and beer? I haven't seen any in Vic so far.
From my understanding beer is not aloud to be sold but wine can be. I don't think many stores want to deal with getting a liquor license, dealing with the clientele and the fact a huge portion that fuels the grocery stores here in Victoria are not of age to sell.
The other HUGE factor for Victoria is the amount of liquor lisences already issued. Literally the hardest thing to obtain in Victoria for a business. I worked in the restaurant business here for many years.
Example:
Before the Bard and Banker was in the process of trying to get a license the owner bought this seedy little night club that use to be under the Wharf street Eatery (now Finns) just so he could transfer the liqour license over . Literally the only way to get one. Also part of the conditions to transfer it over included having to close at 1am and not 2am because of the size discrepancy between the two.
I've made this point in many alcohol-related threads in the past, but our drinking laws are positively Draconian.
You wonder why drinking gets out of control? Its partly because its vilified, partly because we as a society dont encourage social drinking in groups and partly because of outdated attitudes.
The fact of the matter is that a responsible adult should be allowed to enjoy a beer or some wine in the park on a nice day in a social setting without having to get the cops involved.
Want to play rec sports? Whats wrong with a few beers after the game with the team?
The thing is that we vilify drinking and ergo it becomes a problem as opposed to just making it a fun aspect of social opportunities.
You dont have to shotgun a 6-pack, you can sip and enjoy responsibly over the course of the evening or a few hours. Thats the difference.
Who wouldnt want to have the opportunity to stroll through some of our gorgeous parks with their significant other or their pets and enjoy a beer or two?
Where we stumble is locking people into dimly lit rooms which are the only place they're allowed to drink and theres nothing to do but drink and then we wonder why theres a problem with alcohol.
Dont even get me started on 'Beer Gardens' which are the single dumbest thing imaginable.

Could be. Alcohol is pretty great that way in that it can give you a holiday from being shy so you can just enjoy a party as though you were an extrovert.

Yeah, wasting a weekend being hungover is the worst. It's why I like wing night so much, which is Tuesday. Being hungover at work on a Wednesday is way better than killing a Saturday feeling like crap. Tuesday is the new Saturday.
I've found rye and water in a pint glass is awesome for limiting a hangover. It's literally having a huge glass of water with every drink so helps with hydration. Beer or wine kills me the next day, but they're more of a sensory experience. I like neat beers. I'm not a wine connoisseur at all, but I like it with a meal and can basically give a glass a thumb's up or thumb's down. Rye and water is really just for the buzz - it's not particularly enjoyable sans buzz IMO.

What pubs have Wing Tuesday?
I always hear of Wing Wednesdays.

I like to mix my rye with water for the hydration factor as well, plus theres the benefit of bringing out the flavour and not covering it up with pop.
I always add a couple drops of water to rye shots, just a dab really changes the taste for the better I find. With good whiskeys anyways.

That could be my problem. I buy whichever whiskey comes with the coolest swag.
I believe I have mentioned this before, but if a hard alcohol manufacturer would have their lid double as a 1 ounce shot I would buy it over any other brand.

I like whiskey soda, or gin soda with some lime in a pint glass. Limits the hangovers, you get the fizz and lower calorie. Some people have an aversion to not having a sweet mix, but I got used to it pretty quick and switched from tonic to soda for gin.
Been waiting for the shot glass lid as well.
I know people around here turn their nose up at it, because it comes in a plastic bottle and is distilled in calgary, but Alberta premium is one of the few 100% pure rye whiskeys left in the world and always rates very highly. Deeeeelicious.

I have to drink a LOT to be hungover now. When I smoked cigarettes, it was every time.
The best part of giving up social smoking was reducing the intensity of hangovers by 50 per cent.
But hangovers have been the biggest factor in curtailing my drinking. It's one thing to write off an entire Saturday lying in a darkened room watching the Alien trilogy and eating cheese buns when you're 28. It's a different thing altogether when you're 44 and have kids you want to do stuff with.

Yes, very underrated, especially for the price. Their Darkhouse is absolutely fantastic as well, if you spend a few more bucks.

If you'd have got your butt in gear back when you were 28, your kids would be damn near old enough to sit and drink with you all saturday long.
