Fair enough we all sometimes pick the wrong words.
I have been to Buffalo, Buck, Crimson, Twin, Sylvan, Gull, plenty of central Alberta lakes. What in your mind differentiates/makes them better?
Also, I don’t think you can include the interior’s lakes in your discussion, they are different. Mainly the weather out there makes them different, although the Okanogan can be pretty cold water.

Haha so true, what's the deal with that store anyways?
You walk in the front door and you're in this fairly modern makeup/beauty section, then you turn around and the far end of the store looks like a roof mounted hot water tank exploded earlier in the week. Except it's been like that for years.
I even asked one of the clerks about it once and she mumbled something along the lines of "yeah, they're always renovating... you're total is $32.50. Cash or credit?"

Well, they would not to travel to them because they would not be allowed in, its restricted to members only. They keep the riffraff out.
Of course your statement is ludicrous anyway, there is always something better out there until you get to a beach in Maui.

My point is that they wouldn't travel to them even if it hey weren't exclusive. People travel to Lakes to go tubing and jet skiing and for the resort type of atmosphere . Ludacris is comparing a lake beach to a tropical island in the middle of the Pacific ocean.

I doubt Ludacris has ever spent any time at a lake community in Calgary.

There are lakes and there are lakes. Alberta is one of the most lake-impoverished regions in North America, and that has left Albertans with a skewed perspective. Most of what we call lakes are sloughs or ponds.
My mom grew up on Lake Erie, and when we were kids we vacationed at Grand Bend on Lake Huron. When we moved to Alberta, my mom was very distressed that we wouldn't be able to holiday on water anymore. My dad told her he'd heard about a beautiful lake north of Calgary called Sylvan Lake. We drove there one weekend. When we got out of the car and looked at it, my mom broke down and cried.

If Kaanapali was on the ctrain it would get my vote for best community, even though there isn't a lake.

This post is just terrible Cliff, on so many levels.
Did you really just pull the "that's not a lake... this is a lake" argument out with the great lakes in there as the standard? lol
There are 30 lakes bigger than Sylvan Lake in Alberta.
Alberta is not a "region", it contains of several north american regions.
None of the regions in Alberta compare to the desert regions in the SE as far as being "lake impoverished.
In a thread about communities with malls... "Hey guys, We used to live across the street from the "Mall of America" and when we moved here someone told us about a great mall just west of SAIT called "Northland Mall". When we got out of the car my mom went into a coma."

I believe you mean North Hill Mall and not Northland. Northland is northwest of SAIT and about 10 minutes away.

I don't understand how their ranking even works. Seems like it's just based on feeling. For established communities, what exactly changes year to year to make it fluctuate in rankings so much? I've seen annual hockey player rankings that fluctuate less than this absurd list.

It's not terrible, it's how people feel and it's common. Talk to anyone who's move to Alberta from places like Ontario, Manitoba, BC, Nova Scotia. The total lake of fresh water swimming in this province is striking and it certainly impacts quality of life. I love my holiday every summer in Nova Scotia for being able to swim in the ocean and many lakes. Comparing that to a mall is silly and disingenuous.

Skiing is a bourgeois winter sport. It's the golfing of winter. Give me a lake any day. Anyone can go if you can afford a little gas.

Skiing kind of has two worlds - it's a bourgeois sport on one end (e.g. the end where all the money is made), but a huge component of the sport is basically the ski bum lifestyle - people whose only real ski-related expense is a season pass, spend no money on food or other resort-related costs (again, where the real money is made) and get gear for cheap off shop form. Having spend a lot of time in that community, I can tell you it's the least bourgeois group of people you'll ever come across. Just google Henrik Harlaut, he pretty much sums it up.
Anyway, yes, mountains > lakes.

And that is why we skiers are better than you swimmers.
