I hope the intent with Ryan is as 4th line c/ fill in. He'd be way better than staj:
Gaudreau-Monahan-UFA
Tkachuk-lindholm-Bennett
Jankowski-backlund-frolik
Mangiapane-ryan-lazar
Looks pretty nice.

Isn't a statement like this technically tampering?

I am a bit indifferent to this signing.
For starters, I don't see him any further up the lineup than as the 4th line center. He will kill penalties, and he will provide offence from the 4th line. That's good. No, that's great.
I am hesitant about the term and dollar. If he came in cheap and for 3 years or less, then great. If he comes in at 2.5 million or greater, then I would prefer it only being one year. We have some RFAs to sign next season that may take a big chunk of change, and the last thing this team needs - and something this team ALWAYS seems to burden itself with - is high-priced 4th liners.
Ryan has good stats, but I don't want him displacing anyone in the top 9.

Wouldn't it be something if Brad and Bill had this planned out all along, Bill held Lindholm and Hanifin back to keep their value low both in terms of acquisition cost (mind you it wasn't a cheap acquisition cost..) and new RFA deals. Now Bill can release them and have them hit their potential. That would be a grande plan. unlikely but I wonder how much collusion actually takes place...

I'm glad we're not preaching complacency here after running one of the worst forward depth groups in the entire league last year. Hopefully this spells an end to the likes of Lomberg in the lineup on a regular basis

Probably. There's nothing wrong with that either. Hopefully they don't give him Stajan money and everything will be okay.

They tried that last year and the Flames arguably had the worst bottom 6 in the entire league.

Not really. Ryan can keep up with the modern game, drives the net, he can set others up.

I mean, honestly a 31-year old Stajan type on a 2 mil-ish contract isn't the worst thing, as long as Peters doesn't expect to play him up the lineup (unless need be).

It's one thing to complain about new coaches bringing in old players that aren't great like Bartkowski, but it's an entirely different thing if a guy like Ryan is brought in who outscored most of our bottom 6 guys combined.

I mean, I don't mind Ryan, but as long as Peters doesn't overplay him where he shouldn't.

If you want a faceoff guy it makes much more sense to look at someone like Jay Beagle in a faceoff/get-off role the capitals used him in. The Calgary kid is absolutely elite in the faceoff dot and makes next to nothing. At least this route you'd likely not need to pony up more than $1M on a 1-2 year deal and can spend the money saved on addressing the top six wing.
|
I will be shocked if Beagle does not get considerably more 1M...I feel maybe Vancouver would be interested in a guy like Beagle.

Did you mean to put it that way?
Scores less?
Lindholm has more career points, more career goals, a higher points per game, a higher goals per game and has done it all younger.
Why push this narrative based on the tally of one season? Hell even if you want to use two and average Ferland at 19 goals and 33 points and Lindholm at 14 and 45 he's the more productive player.

Pretty silly to not sign a good fourth line player for fear that the coach is bringing in his guys isn't it?
This isn't Peters going to bat to put the guy on Monahan's line.

You should all know by now that most people are idiots and not to expect fanboys to give a fair assessment of players that didn't want to sign with their team/were traded ect. It like asking a guy about the girl that just dumped him. "She was okay, nothing special...was gonna break up with her soon" yeah okay
|
I don't see their fans complaining about Ryan as a player, just the way Peters used him. They're saying he was used in OT etc.
Nothing against the player but that's seems kind of dumb.

I sat down and watched a couple full games and a bunch of highlight packs when I thought we would get Peters as a coach.
In those games and replays Ryan shows up frequently 5v5 and on the PP. All in a good way. This is definitely not a Brouwer situation. I'm not surprised and I'm happy we are looking at bringing him in.
