She only knows the next movie in the slate is Ant-Man and The Wasp only cos she saw a trailer not too long ago. She didn't know the significance of paging Captain Marvel in the end credits. Suffice to say, she's a pretty casual fan.
But, the ending of this movie really shook her. She said that the Thanos wasn't supposed to "win". When Black Panther started to dissipate and you saw that shocked look on Okoye's face, that was when my wife started to get the sense that #### is getting real. She was borderline annoyed at me for not being saddened about Spider-Man dying (SM is my favorite superhero and she was sure I'd tear up over his loss). Basically, the "emotional" devastation was much more pronounced for her than for me. While I loved the movie, the ending did not have as much of an effect on me simply because of what I knew in the real world. For my wife, the ending was pretty crushing.

I saw an older kid consoling his distraught younger brother, explaining that Spider-Man and Black Panther aren't gone forever and how Fury was contacting Captain Marvel to save everyone. It was kind of touching to watch, these movies are having a huge impact on young kids

I'm surprised how much this movie lived up to the hype for me. Part of me was expecting another Age of Ultron mess, but that couldn't have been further from reality.
As usual, a good villain creates a good movie, and they hit it out of the park with Thanos.

It'd be funny if GOTG 3 starred Rocket Rabbit and Thor exclusively.

That is insane, breaking the global box office record without even being in screened in China yet. The final numbers for IW are going to be reaching Avatar levels I think

Honestly Thanos was even better on second viewing.
The Soul Stone scene was just so well done. The tears running through the crevices on his face, the turn around in Gamora's emotions when she realizes what is going on, and then finishing it off with what looks like a parent dragging a small child to do something they don't want to do as he takes her to the cliff.
Between that scene, talking about having to hear Gamora say how much she hated him every day in front of the throne, and the flashback scene on Gamora's home planet, they really built a villian that was terrifying while also really humanizing him.
Just all the little things they did to develop Thanos as a character, even just subtly running his hands through Wanda's hair and calling her my child before finishing off Vision.

Marvel movies typically don't have legs and with Solo out in 3 weeks I think it will have a steeper fall off than Black Panther. I don't think it touches Avatar domestically or Internationally.
I don't think it reaches BLack Panther domestically as it would need a 2.8x multiple to get there.
It will be the biggest super hero movie of all time Internationally though.

Even without inflation adjusting, it would need a 4.36 multiplier to beat Avatar. The huge multipliers are typically reserved for movies with huge family appeal, that kids want to see more than once.
The choice to go a bit darker makes for a better movie, but will probably hurt its legs.

Basically this movie really went where a lot of other big franchise movies won't go.
A movie that defined a villain intentional, and mass murdered the hero's and left the universe pretty much in darkness.
There was no Luke and Leia standing in the window watching Lando fly off in the Falcon (wearing Hans clethes, so creepy) and you had a sense of real hope.
If the disney came out tomorrow and announced. We're not making any more Avengers movies it would be the darkest blockbuster ever.

Also they need to dissipate Deadpool at the end of his movie.

Zoe Saldana really knocked it out of the park this movie. I did not expect so much emotional gravitas from a character like Gamora.

I liked it, pretty good. They really jammed a lot of characters in there and if I had to say who felt like the main characters it would be Strange, Thanos, and Thor. The wiping out of major characters who you know are not staying dead really kind of killed any punch that final scene had for me but still very Empire feeling at the end.
Edit: ooh the worst thing in the entire movie was at the end when Ruffalo was in the hulk buster armour standing behind cap with the armour’s helmet off. That CGI looked like an intern did it on their first day.

I'll be disappointed if he doesn't make a joke about Brolin picking a role and sticking with it.
As for IW, this was a pleasant surprise. I mean, I thought it would be pretty epic, but I was impressed with how they managed a cast that size and molded a solid, coherent story that wasn't frantic in the slightest.
As a semi-casual fan (never read the comics, know the big names, had to look up the significance of the end-credits scene) I still understand the formula of superhero movies. The final scenes were interesting because I didn't think they would end off that way, but it wasn't emotionally jarring. Alright, maybe Parker begging Tony to help him was a little rough. They will be back in some way.
However, I think Marvel has learned from Logan that you can end a character or multiple characters if you do it well, and leave hope for the future. I suspect some characters will ultimately sacrifice themselves in some way in A4.
For the first time in 20 years, I am considering heading back to the theatre to see a movie again.

For people that aren't as familiar with the comics that ending was just jarring. Modern cinema has led us to believe the villain never wins, and the good guys always prevail - and to have a movie actually end with not only the villain winning but that many characters just disappearing is a big jump.
Now I can't wait to see how it all plays out in A4 (Probably will be titled Avengers Forever now that I think about it also being part 4).
Also give me a movie titled "Pirate Angel, Rabbit, & Tree" and I will be happy forever. Honestly how would that movie not break all the records.
|
Avengers Forever is a great title. The comic book of the same name is one of the best Avengers stories ever told. Although the comic book version has nothing to do with Thanos and the infinity stones, and the fact Batman already used that title, nevertheless I’d be happy if they called it that.

IMO These three quotes + my wife's reaction really summarize just how successful the MCU universe really is.
It is easily the most ambitious series of movies that I can recall being this successful. I know people call the marvel movie formula cookie cutter, but who really thought that a story arc told through 22 movies over 11 years (by the time A&W, Captain Marvel, & A4 finish Phase 3) would actually work as well as it has.
Wildly successful commercially: Check
Lives Up To the Hype of Comic Book Fans: Check
Engaging for casual fans, kids, & children: Check
Built characters that people were emotionally attached to: Check
