They desperately need a #1 C, he gets to stay out East, they can give him big dollars, and he gets to be the face of the most historic team in hockey history. That and just a feeling.

I never really thought of Tavares as wanting to be the guy that would want all the pressure that comes along with playing in a market like MTL. I just can't see it. I think he wants to join a team with a few stars already that are in their primes or close to and make those runs for the cup IE) Kessel

This is the 4.8 percent chance that Calgary has. Under a coach with a looser style, playing with Johnny, Gio, and Hamilton, with rush passes from Smith could be a tonne of fun for a player like Taveras. To be surrounded by that kind of offensive talent is something he hasn't had the luxury of in his career, yet.

I wonder if Vancouver will throw money at him, since the Sedins are off the books. If that is the case.. then the price is going to be high, no matter where he goes.

Well, except for Barzal Lee Bailey Eberle Beauvillier Pulock and Leddy.
NYI are the 8th highest scoring team in the NHL with 260 goals for.
Calgary has 211 goal for.
Only Buffalo Arizona and Montreal have less.

I don't really see the difference if they drafted him or not, the point was that they would have 2 x #1 centres which is the same as Pit. Pit also have Kessell 6.8M, Hornqvist 4.25M (now 5.3), Hegelin 4M + Sheary and Brassard at 3M on the wings. They are staying under the cap by filling the bottom lines with cheap veterans and ELC's, not by worrying about having too many star forwards.

I don't see why any big time UFA signs in Montreal right now. Yeah, the history is clearly amazing, but it's history. They're nowhere near competing and you're getting like a million less a year take home on a big contract because of their tax rates. All while playing in the second biggest fishbowl in the league.

NYI are also the worst in GA by a country mile
Calgary's high end players have done well in a tight system...their goal totals are low because of the lack of forward depth.
JT would improve that big time

The Flames most talented players have had career seasons.
Just not enough of them.

Calgary will inquire, be rejected by Tavares and continue their 30 year run of mediocrity as per the usual.

I take issue with it being labelled as "mediocrity"
4 playoff round victories in 29 years is far from mediocre. It's well beyond that. It's abysmal.

I think he will end up on a team like San Jose. I don't see him on aNY Canadian team let alone the Flames.

the Flames can and should pursue JT; i just don't think there's any good reason why he would leave to come to Calgary.
it would be different if he was from the prairies for example.
but for JT, what's the reason? NYI will undoubtedly match or come close to matching all offers and its not as though Calgary offers a better chance at winning the Cup than the NYI do... or other bidders for that matter.
