Shouldn't NYR have gotten more for McDonaugh? Namestnikov and Miller are a wash imo (give Miller Namestikov's minutes and vise versa and see what happens)
It's basically McDonagh for a 1st and a 2nd... isn't he a top pairing Dman? With a year left on his deal? Seems as though Yzerman wins yet another trade. Or are these prospects anything any good? Never heard of either until today.

I think Tampa paid a lot, personally.
Not a huge Miller fan, and he is a wash with Namestnikov, IMO.
The rest is a lot to pay for McDonagh for a year and a bit. Obviously if they win the cup, then it is a good trade. But I don't see how they are going to re-sign him. And Miller needs a new contract this summer.
I like the deal for the Rangers.

I would have loved JT miller on the flames. That said, looking at the collection of stuff NY received back in the deal I have no idea what they actually charged for the Miller part of trade. Have to presume Flames could not offer that.

NHL.com considered Brett Howden to be the Lightning's second best prospect behind Sergachev this summer. He's 19 years old putting up 58 points in 38 games as the captain for the favourite Moose Jaw Warriors in the WHL. He's nothing to sneeze at. Plays all three forward positions and a 200 foot game. Brief stint in the AHL saw him put up 4 points in 5 games last year.
He's a late first who is developing nicely putting him as at the very least equivalent to the 1st the Rangers received this year.

Don't think Girardi is a top 4 guy anymore.

No doubt that finishing top 5 in the draft helps, but it's not a sure thing.
Tampa moved Drouin, 3rd overall pick. They moved Brett Connolly, 6th overall pick, for 2 high picks.
No question, Tampa hit home runs in their drafting and you can't account for that, but they've also been active in improving their club. Look at today.
In the last three years the Flames have Drafted
1st Round: 2x
2nd Round: 4x
3rd Round: 1x
In the last three years the Lightning have drafted
1st Round: 2x
2nd Round: 6x
3rd Round: 4x
In the last 3 years, Tampa has missed the playoffs, lost in the finals, lost in the conference finals.
How on earth are the Flames going to compete with Tampa if that's the kind of drafting Tampa is doing while they are deep in the hunt for the cup?

"A season and a bit" is a huge understatement meant to be dismissive, For a top three contender for the Stanley Cup a part season, a full season and two playoff runs for a great defenseman is a lifetime.

I'm not all that worried about the Flames competing with Tampa

Well that certainly makes things easier, I guess. I'm starting to see why many Flames fans are able to keep such positive perspective at our team's mediocrity through the years, lol.

I get to see Hajek play here in Regina, and he is a player. NYR are smart to ask for him, and if he can translate his WHL game to the NHL game, this is a solid pick up for them.
Everybody thinks Tampa wins in this deal, but I think the potential for of Howden and Hajek, and the now/potential of Namestikov, outweigh it. In addition, they get that 1st (late) and second as well.
I don't see McDonough resigning in Tampa, and he's approaching the wrong side of 30.

Brett Howden is a really good pickup. I like what I've seen from Hajek as well. I don't think NY did that bad here.

Eastern team trading high end prospects and picks to get better for a year or two...As a Flames fan why would this worry me?

Boston and Tampa are likely playing in round two...one of these deadline "winners" is going to be dissapointed

He plays on their second pairing now with Sergachev. Plays a lot of PK as well. Only Stralman and Hedman play more mins overall.
That teams defense is absurdly good and deep.

Howden and Hajek are really nice long-term pieces, yes. Still, Namestnikov/Miller is pretty much a wash (similar age, similar production, similar contract status). Tampa will surely be able to fit McDonagh under the cap next season (Kunitz and Sustr are UFA, which frees up almost 4m; plus they could easily trade a guy like Johnson for cap relief). Yzerman clearly feels they have a wide open window for a year or two and McDonagh is a perfect fit in that regard.
Still I feel the Rangers are in a good position for a quick on-the-fly rebuild. Three 1sts this year, plus two 2nds and two 3rds ... that's a lot of ammunition in the draft, plus Spooner and Namestnikov are young enough to be a part of their next core. Howden and Hajek immediately upgrade their prospect pool too, next to guys like Andersson and Chytil. Plus they even have cap space for the first time in ages.

Did you read the post you responded to? Flashwalken wasn't talking about this trade he was speaking to the difference in draft pick accumulation and picking between the two organizations.
He was basically breaking down the difference between contender strategy and mediocre teams strategy, and although I love the Hamilton trade and would keep that one, he's likely right that in a league where you need to accumulate picks and play the odds that some will turn into stars, the mediocre teams (like Calgary unfortunately) try to speed things up and get burnt.
