Last lap someone needs to make a move.

Can they not get Steve Armitage a co-host in this distance speed skating?

It's awful. He's doing his best to fill in the silence, but each race is 6 minutes. And there are 12 races.

The guy can only make "there are 6 laps remaining" sound exciting so many times.

I've recorded Armitage. Flipped over to cross country.

Go harvey!

So much for Harvey being touted as the smartest in the field and the fittest he's ever been, as was mentioned throughout the broadcast...8th and half a minute back as failed dramatically in the last 2.5k fitness wise and strategy wise.

Ok, this is now getting funny.

Armitage is such a pro. He's got nothing to work with but has researched and is keeping it on point.

But man, that's a lot of time to kill.

We're learning about the norweigan's research on their study of colours of uniform and success rates.

Blue, in case you're wondering.

The Dutch skater in this race is a farmer. With 3 kids.

Reference to 1994 and Lillehammer. Johan Voss.

4 LAPS to GO!!! For this pairing! 4 pairings of 11.

But the favourites yet to come.

....

But DE Vries, the farmer, struggling. Falling off his pace. The norweigan has made his break.

....

Final. LAP!!!!!!

And they can't overtake the leaders time.

Cut to commercial

The Belgian is a former roller speed skater, but has made the switch to ice.

You can hear her getting into the booth

Hockey is on TSN and CBC.
Women's slope style won't have prelims..straight to a 2 run final.

Also, Armitage's color woman yesterday Kristina Groves was losing her voice yesterday....thus likely the reason they had to scramble to find someone quickly today.

Anastasia Bustych (sp?) Has joined Steve. You can hear the relief in his voice.

Lobbing some softballs her way.

Thank God.

We were one lap away from hearing about crop conditions and anticipated yields for the last guy's farm.

Now we're hearing about strategy, ice conditions, etc.

I'm guessing it was a last minute replacement today.

Mark Lee back calling hockey is good. Hard to believe with blowhards like Romaniuk and Randorf and Quinn that this guy doesn't have a job in this country...but recall he was rumored to be the Flames guy before it was announced as Ball.

Also forgot all about former Flames radio host Mitch Peacock being part of CBC.

Agreed on Lee.

I think this Finnish goalie must drink the same water as Kipper. She's been awesome on the bits I've watched.

Is the Finnish Valimaki any relation to our Valimaki?

Edit: not that I can tell from a google search. Linda Valimaki won a bronze for Finland in Vancouver. You'd think if they were related that would have come up.

Finland scores with 5 seconds left in the first period. 1-0. Didn't expect that

For anyone who dabbles in online gambling, keep an eye on some of these games. I noticed Finland was paying 45:1 to be leading after the first with 8 minutes left in the period. With odds like that, never hurts to put a couple bucks down and cross your fingers.
