Nothing wrong with starting your 4th line, if they are a successful energy line. I always thought it was to be used to establish a high energy level, 'keep it simple', north/south game, shift right from the start.
The issue is, if you don't have a half good 4th line that can play with that identity, and usually are losing their shift every time they are on the ice, i really don't know what exactly the coaching staff are trying to establish....

The Flames should ideally be playing their 4th line as little as possible.

We’ve shown not to be. Look around, everyone is trying to run players out of town. TJ Brodie isn’t an NHL quality d-man, damn Dougie Hamilton for not playing a perfect game every night and don’t even get me started on that not-1st-line-centre Sean Monahan!
We’re simply not very loyal fans anymore. It’s part of modern fandom. It’s all about being hyper-critical and skewing towards the negative, rather than the positive and hoping for better days ahead while being unwilling to take the lumps along the way.

Starting a 4th line is all about setting the tone for the game.
With how the 4th line has been playing for the Flames, the only tone they have been setting is: "The Flames are easy to play against!"
Sutter and Hartley started their 4th lines to let the opposing teams know that they are in for a world of hurt, don't try any funny business, and that this is going to be a war of attrition tonight.

I know that when Feterik bought the Stampeders and made his son the starting QB, I went from being a regular fan at McMahon, to not even caring that much about the CFL in general.
I find it hard to cheer for the Blue Jays sometimes, because the owner is Rogers, who as a corporation doesn't inspire any loyalty.
With Hotchkiss gone and Murray Edwards in (when not escaping to Europe to avoid taxes), I do find myself having trouble bridging the gap when the team is underperforming.
Maybe its that I'm older now, but I can't disconnect the owner from the product like I used to be able to do. I'm a lot less likely to give the benefit of the doubt, and have a little patience.

I have a hard time betting against the Flames, I'm always optimistic and want them to do well so I'm historically always pulling for a win.
However the below highlights my concerns for this game, outside of the every game concerns outlined here on a daily basis revolved around Glueguns disregard for line or defensive pair juggling/game plan adaptation:
- Philly coming in on a 10 game losing streak - What better way than to have a nice breakout of slump game vs Calgary. We seem to always be involved in personal or team slump changes.
- Elliott back at the dome after an abysmal playoff performance for the flames last year. Why not come shutout the flames and silence the critics just because you can... please god dont let this happen.
Just win, please. After being at the game Saturday night struggling to find my way through the thousands of McDroolcup jersey/sweatpant combinations along with the embarassment of having to listen to more Edmonton chanting then Calgary all game long....
I just want us to give 60 minutes of effort. Please, its all I'd take for Xmas.

Yeah, as Calgary4Life said, starting the 4th line is usually about setting the tone and sending a message.
The Oilers started with Draisaitl's line (not their checking line). We countered with Stajan. I fail to see the purpose.
Zero hits, zero energy, 30 seconds in our end. Awesome way to start the game. I mean, if there was a purpose for it, but it just didn't go as planned, then sure. But what exactly was the purpose here? Our 4th line doesn't bring energy. They don't hit. And they sure as hell don't drive the play offensively.

I know his ice time has been limited but Hathaway needs to play better if he wants to stick with the big club. Haven't seen much yet.

We have 3 R shots on our 4th line and 0 R shots in our top 9. Not an issue but interesting to note. And I'm bored so I will include a diagram:

Not sure why you think he's MMF. They don't seem even remotely similar to me.

Teams usually do a video montage for ex-players coming back for their first game...
Would it be in poor taste to do one of Elliott ####ting the bed in the playoffs last year?

I doubt he's pretending, considering it's the way he writes all the time.
Don't be an a-hole about it. You don't know why he writes like that.

More likely he's the poster who at one point left in misery, because people wouldn't stop bashing his writing style. Hint.

Brian Elliott sucks!
Fire the coach!
Improve the defense!
Need better depth scoring!
You're wasting the best years of your superstars!

I missed the battle of Alberta...which in this case wasn't a bad thing. I was fortunate enough to see the hated Ducks play in Nashville. It is good to know that the Ducks aren't just hated in Alberta. Since the Preds knocked The Ducks out of the playoffs it was billed to be a great match....and it did not disappoint.
In fact the only disappointing part of the trip was the notice I got from my Flames App that the Flames trailed the Oilers at home 6-1. It was at this point that any latitude I had given GG as a coach was gone. You see any die hard Flames fan would take a 10 game losing streak before losing in this manner to the Oilers.
Questionable player usage aside, not being able to prepare his team to play its long time heated rivals in the biggest game of the year is beyond acceptance and explanation. People have commented on the job that Travis Green has done with a average Vancouver Canucks team showing what good, smart coaching can do. We have also seen how Claude Julien has gone from a coach on the bubble to an astute coach again with the play of Price.
GG has been able to keep a talented team afloat with exceptional goaltending. They say Good goaltending makes great coaches...except when they don't. I think it is time to blow up the lines and D pairings to find some chemistry. I would like to see this experiment, trade Brodie for a Top RW, and GG replaced.
Right now my only hope of a turnaround lies in the fact that Paul Maurice, the coach of the Jets had a highly under performing team and looked like the players did not buy into his system until one day it just clicked. We could be so lucky.

Been down that road before with this franchise, and if it turns out to be the case we are in a load of trouble, because that will call into question the guy behind the building of this team, and if he actually doesn't know what he's doing we will be in for a world of hurt.

The one stat that always seems to rear its ugly head is that teams with a negative GOal Diff rarely make the playoffs. I don't think this will be any different this year. I am definately starting to take the Corsi metric with a grain of salt. I have seen some abysmal games by the Flames where theyhad the better Corsi that left me shaking my head.
