Brouwer was -2 along with Versteeg and Bennett.
Now Brodie and Hamonic, they were -3.

I don't know if I can watch Ferland on the first line much longer. Just not a top line player, figure it out already.

This team has absolutely no swagger. Been that way since Hartley was fired. If they truly wanted to ice the best possible lineup Janko would have played and Brodie would be on the other goddamn side of the ice.
This cannot sit well with Burke. The Oilers have kicked the #### out of us for two years now.

Since when was this a dump and chase team??? And if you're going to dump and chase, you have to chase.. so frustrating to see zero hustle out there and next to NO zone time and pressure. Also, I think their next practice should be back to the basics of passing. These millionaire professional hockey players couldnt make or take a pass to save their lives tonight. I noticed this in pre season as well. Get it together boys!!!
Smith was great and that is a big relief

Yah - except for the high stick on Steeger they totally missed from 10' away. (You can see the ref's pants on screen.)

Yep. The sad fact is that he's dangerous enough to change the whole game. He needs to be targeted and beat up in order to be taken out of the game. Every whistle when's he's on the ice should feature a face wash and some chippy stuff.
Watching this game, you get the sense that he's ready to tear up the league this year.

I think people are just calling it as they see it. If you can't handle it and just want constant inane cheerleading for no reason then maybe this thread isn't the one for you.
It's not about "constantly being negative" or whatever, it's about talking about the game we just saw, which was an unmitigated disaster.
Calgary had next no chances. No sustained pressure, no urgency or desire, no physicality... like wtf do you want people to talk about?
The goalie was good. That is truly great. Now what?

Brodie was a -3. Brouwer was only a -2. The top D pairing and the triple-M first line were even.

It didn't sit well with Burke last season either... Which is why he and Treliving brought in Cramarossa, Glass and Gazdic to fight for their guaranteed roster spot to really teach the Oilers a lesson

Brodie has put up 100+ games of suckage with some good games sprinkled in between.
When do we start worrying? He looks lost out there

I was seriously impressed with Edmonton's defense tonight. They shut us down at every turn. Not many high quality scoring chances for the Flames. Something will have to change because we're not going to win many games playing like that. McDavid is great sure, but even without him we we're severely outplayed

It's not BS. Look what happened to the Oilers in the playoffs when McDavid was shut down.
Better defence???
Don't make me laugh!

Tough game as a Flames fan. Hope we can get rolling faster than last season, but we didn't look great tonight. Frustrating thing for me is that the Oilers came prepared to shut us down, and did it very effectively. We have to focus on one player, and we somehow leave him open for three breakaways. Don't think our coaching was great, team wasn't ready to play and we were far too predictable. Player's to blame of course too. Only plus for me is that Smith looked very, very solid.
I think we have to stop showing so much respect to the McDavid line, crazy as that sounds, but we looked like we were on the PK whenever they were in our zone. Just scared. We should be looking to force them to defend and just be aware that he's out there and play him hard when he has the puck, or is about to get it.

This is the biggest takeaway from the game for me. You had one team, Edmonton, that had much better spacing, much better support, and a clear idea of what they wanted to do with the puck in all three zones. Even if you discount what the McDavid line could do, as he is a special player, the middle two lines for Edmonton we're much more effective against Calgary's Superior defense, then Calgary's middle two lines were against Edmonton's middle-of-the-road defense, and it was all down to systems.

Amazing to me that the Oilers can move Draisaitl to wing but the Flames can’t with Bennett. Organizational fail.
