Ok, scenario is, flames have 4 good seasons. They make the playoffs 4/4, they make the final 4 twice, including the last year where they move on to the finals. Cannot lock gaudreau into an offseason extension. Does tre pull the trigger right away or go balls to the wall ala yzerman?

In 5 years time, Gaudreau will refuse to sign in Calgary and moves somewhere close to home.

This will be a shame as the 2022-2023 Flames will have to look to fill a major hole in their attempt to win their 6th straight Stanley Cup.

I don't think it would make any difference. Sure his skin is black, but he's Canadian. What does he have in common with the average African American? He doesn't talk like them, doesn't walk like them, doesn't dress like them, doesn't act like them.

He's not even from an area of Canada with a larger African demographic like Toronto. He's your typical Alberta boy and he belongs here in Calgary.

Do you guys remember this time last year, when we were at only 14,327 posts out of 285,653 total posts discussing Johnny signing his contract?

Those were the days.

I thought we'd been over this. Well, for posterity...

I have stayed out of it because it's such a non-story but middle of summer or not there's better hockey related things to talk about.

Johnny's a Flame for the next five years guaranteed. He can do whatever the hell he wants after he wins a few cups during that time. He wants and expects to win here and the team will be a contender in the next few seasons. What else do we need to discuss?

I find it embarrassing that Sportsnet got a hold of this and ran a quick story on this in the very same fashion as the OP.

Again, imagine a casual fan watching that and sitting with buddies who are fans of other teams... the ridicule they endured about how Johnny doesn't even want to be a Flame..

Embarrassing...

Quote:
“I’d encourage everybody to get a nice book, a nice hobby, go for a nice walk – the weather has been beautiful in Calgary – and we will be back to playing games soon enough where there’ll be real stories to cover,” said Treliving wryly. “This does not concern me at all. I think in some ways he’s having an interview in his hometown. And I think anybody when you talk about your hometown, there’s two ways to answer the question. There’s the way of saying, ‘Absolutely hell no do I ever want to be there,’ or I think a general response that Johnny gave was probably the correct one and probably the popular one that you, I, or anybody would respond to.

“There’s nothing here that concerns us at all. I know I spoke to Johnny the other day. He was out a week or so ago and did some things here in Calgary. He’s anxious to get going. He’s excited about the upcoming season. And I know he loves living and playing in Calgary.

“So I think reports of this – you can just settle into a nice book, go see a movie, and we don’t have to necessarily worry about there being too much fire where we think there’s smoke.”

The fact that Tre even needed to comment on that is sad enough in and of itself.

It was bad enough we had to watch the horror story of people melting down in August / September last year.

Johnny inks long term and still speaks glowingly about Calgary and there's still a sizeable contingent of chicken littles here and in the fan base quasi-panicking about what might happen five years from now.

Sad.
