It's exciting because this most likely means that treliving is prepping to add up front. I imagine it will be an older winger on a shorter term contract. Hoping for either Williams or Marleau. Don't know if really want Doan or Jagr.
However, in terms of Bouma I was content on just having him here for depth for one more year and then have him completely off the books. Don't like the dead cap space we will have next year.

Damn it. I don't want to have to hate Booms.

I don't get the bury him in the minors thing. They obviously want to move on and cutting all ties is the best way to do it. I think burying him is the least classy way to do it.

I believe the Flames are still working on getting Stone back.

Never the same after breaking his hand. Don't think he's got much left, would be surprised if he gets another NHL contract.

Bouma could crack the Canucks roster.

What don't you get. It's a way to clear a roster spot and cap space at the NHL level without incurring a multi-year penalty. In some instances a buyout is the correct move... I just don't think this was one of them.

A line of Baertschi - Granlund - Bouma would look pretty sweet!

What I notice about Tre is he's not afraid to correct his mistakes.

You might be right. I don't know about decisiveness and the goalies moves are just basically what they did last year. Buying out Bouma and taking on Murphy do seem different than the Bollig approach but they did buy out Raymond last year.

Gawd I hope not... we need scoring depth way more then just another depth defender. That would be a mistake by Treliving.

Playing that line one night and then the next night facing a Wideman-Russel pairing in Edmonton will be weird... yet undaunting!

We're signing a FA for sure tomorrow with this move. Makes no sense unless they want to cap room

Disagree.
Not saying we don't need scoring depth, but anyone thinking "We'll just roll with a 3rd pairing of two kids" is out to lunch. It's not a good situation, and could be awful if someone in the top four is injured.
Having Stone (*if* the cap hit is friendly) on the 3rd pairing would be extremely advantageous.
Especially considering the supposed scoring depth that is out there right now. IE talk of Doan etc.
A stable bottom pairing D-man (at a fair price) is a big need.

Treliving is definitely a live for today type of GM. Trading draft picks and buyouts that move money into next year is pretty clear evidence of wanting to win now IMO. I think most fans can live with that.

IIRC Bouma was scratched for the last game during playoffs. Against a heavy team like the Ducks one would think he would've shone. Now maybe they just wanted to shake things up due to zero wins but I didn't think CGY brought enough physicality that series.
Bouma could skate well and was a good grinder. I'm interested to see what Treliving has in store for the makeup of the bottom lines.

Stone in the #5 spot is not "just another depth defender." His addition to the current group would give the Flames arguably the best group of defensemen in the NHL. The team took a dip in scoring last year, and part of that had to do with new coaching, but there is a strong case to be made that the Flames should be back among the top-ten offensive teams in the League again this year.
I am not convinced that scoring depth is a serious problem.
