So it's the meds that are making him unable to play, not his actual condition. I want to know more - what are the meds, what are the side-effects, are there no alternatives, etc. And where is Street Pharmacist?

This has been carefully orchestrated so I wouldn't buy into anything the Hawks or Hossa camp is selling as they have probably had their lawyers put a lot of effort into covering their bases. This is nothing more than salary cap circumvention. The fact that a poster here (Flash) called this years a few years ago just shows how predictable this was.
Real shame that a great player like Hossa has to go out in a farce like this.

I never once thought teams would actually be punished for these contracts. Guys are too smart. Especially after the Devils and Kovalchuk fiasco.

If this is legit then it's not just hockey he can't do. Anything that makes him sweat should cause a flare up... We shall see. I had a friend (now passed) with a similar sounding disorder. Couldn't work up a sweat at all without breaking out in a full body rash. Very painful. Had it for years and the Meds helped send him to an early death

Can't really comment on the medical condition, but if it is something that he has played with previously, there needs to be some cap recapture.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

He can do hockey. He just did less than two months ago for 73 games plus the playoffs last season.

My guess is they're suggesting he needs Prednisone (potent corticosteroid), which may affect his play a bit. It all seems a bit hokey to me, but as with many of these things, it's plausible. I'm sure tons of players could have played on shorter courses of Prednisone in the past. Players with colitis have played in the NHL and I'm sure they've had flare ups. If the allergy is that severe, the only real resolution would be to remove the allergen exposure (equipment).
I'm not sure what the WADA rules or NHL PED are with regards to corticosteroids. They don't have any obvious performance enhancing effects, and most if not all of the side effects would be deleterious.

It gets really hard to take this league seriously when you know the league is going to support the Hawks (because it's in their best interest for the Hawks to do well), despite having laid the groundwork for cap recapture penalties, despite the Hawks having won 3 Cups with this contract, and despite it being completely predictable.
Where is the fun for fans of other teams?

My first reaction was disbelief. But if they're going to do something like this, why wouldn't they pick something like back pain, or headaches, stuff that's easier to believe and hard to prove.
But... then again, I still think they're making this up.

Because it is real?
I'm not sure why folks don't think this is possible.
Allergies and skin conditions can get quite severe and painful, and medications to treat can have serious side effects.
I give the people involve the benefit of the doubt absent proof that something fishy is actually happening.

For him to go on LTIR the league doctors will have to approve. If they do, it's not really fake.
The issue (not sure if it is an issue) is that it doesn't actually stop him from playing. It's just super painful, annoying, hard, etc. For 4 million he was willing to take that discomfort. For 1 million he isn't. Totally reasonable from a players perspective.
But does it really matter. There would be tons of non cap teams who would have taken Hossa at 1 million real salary. Chicago could have traded him tomorrow with no issue.

Most people here accept it is "possible"...
The timing of it just makes it "highly suspect"... Plays full seasons while he's making the big money, and as soon as it drops to 1M/yr, he's taking the year off.
If this had even come up 1 year earlier, it would have substantially more realism behind it. But it didn't, and that's why it's being questioned (not to mention, it sounds pretty 'out there').

While it seems way too convenient, this wouldn't be as easy to hide as a concussion. Seems like if somebody at the NHL is calling BS (which I wouldn't blame them for), it'd be mighty easy to prove, wouldn't it? I know a guy who has bad skin and it's pure torture. He hasn't had a warm shower in probably 20 years. It's also quite noticeable.

Perhaps the medication is having longer-term consequences.
I was on something years ago and after taking it for a few months I was advised to halt immediately as it was causing concerns with an internal organ.

2 weeks ago he was reported as healthy and preparing for next season.
What happened between now and then?
