The left needs the working class. The UK Labour Party - a party deliberately built to champion the interests of the working class - has basically collapsed as the working class abandoned it in recent years. It's now the party of English majors and web designers, and a small cadre of socialist true believers. Identity politics proved to be a dead-end.
Some of the more conspiracy-minded socialists in the UK believe the whole identity politics movement is a neoliberal ploy to keep the working class divided. That's clearly nonsense. But there's some truth to the notion that identity politics is a hobby-horse of the comfortably well off. I doubt many single mothers or chronically unemployed worry about the ethnicity of superheroes, transgendered bathrooms, or safe spaces at universities. Bernie Sanders called out the American left for its obsession with this stuff. It's also curious that a lot of white progressives have no problem expressing shame and contrition over their racial 'privilege', but rarely express the same for their economic status.
