Gaudreau made such a smart play in OT causing that 2 on 0 and Backlund played it perfectly.

I actually would love to see Gaudreau play with Backlund as he's one of a few guys who can match his speed. We've seen them have chemistry before in 3 on 3 and I think it can carry over for longer stretches.

Elliott played solid.

Wideman was garbage.

Brodie was solid, Gio had an ok game nothing spectacular and a few bone headed passes. Hamilton was the best player on the ice for both teams.

A good game before the break and I hope this is the start of a streak.

Great things happened. Johnny gets a goal, a game winner. Elliott more than solid, saved the game. Monahan was dangerous. Ferland was rewarded.

Funny how some posters still want to switch lines after they worked quite well tonight.

Sorry, Calgaryblood, but IMO Brodie still wasn't "on". He messed up and led to the tying goal, a crucial mistake at a crucial time. And I didn't see any "garbage" play by Wideman. He was fine.

Since I was responding to someone who was suggesting that Tkachuk should be taken off of Backlund's line, I assumed that it had not actually happened yet. People don't normally talk about actual ongoing events as if they were hypothetical.
I said in my very first post that I didn't mind Frolik on the Monahan-Gaudreau line.

Regardless, now that we're all caught up, that line was broken up so a lot of things are in play when we're playing as poorly as we are.

I think it's worth a shot to see how the kid looking with Gaudreau and Monahan.

True; I had forgotten. But that still doesn't mean Tkachuk should be removed from Backlund's other wing (or that he has been already).

Yes, I agree it's worth a shot. And I wasn't shooting down the idea. I just think you need a pretty solid plan for Backlund's LW when you do it, and I was wondering what ideas people had. I'm sorry it didn't come across the way I intended.

We're 1-4 in our last five, and blew a two goal lead in the 3rd period to pull it out in OT. Good news and the right step forward, but I'd hardly act like tonight's lines should be set it stone now because we've suddenly got it all figured out.

Brodie hasn't been on all season. I know his mind might not be on hockey all the time because of his wife's illness, but man I hope he busts out soon. He just looks like a different player right now, coughing up pucks, making bad passes, isn't jumping into the play and doing things he's awesome at.

Just my 2 cents.

I still don't see that as being a big issue. They put Chaisson on Back's wing tonight. Not the end of the world.

If it's Backlund + Frolik, I'd be even less concerned about who skates on the LW if Tkachuk got a stint with Johnny and Monahan. Someone said Bennett and that might be a great idea for a bit.

Now that Chiasson has been separated from Gaudreau, Brodie on the right is basically the last pet experiment that Gulutzan is clinging onto. The problem is that we have too many natural righty dmen right now.

Is Brodie returning to form worth two or more of our lower pairing dmen suddenly turning into whipping boy turnover machine Chris Butler? Kind of a rock and a hard place decision right now until some roster moves are made.

Step in the right direction tonight but letting go of the 2 goal lead in the third still showed the team's confidence is fragile. That OT goal was huge. Let's hope they relax a little over the break and come back a little looser and more hungry.

Both goals were the direct result of crappy plays by Versteeg.

First goal he can't get the puck deep while his line mates are desperate for a change. Puck comes up the ice fast and no one has time to get in position. In the net.

Second goal was Versteeg taking an extra long shift again causing the late line change and chaos: he was on way too long that shift and should have and could have changed earlier. Not entirely his fault on the second goal but he played a big part in it.

Don't see him being re-signed and he was an ok stop gap for a bit but it's obvious he can't keep up.

And for the love of God put Hamilton on the first pp unit.

Yeah I agree, tough decisions on D. We're stuck with Wideman till the offseason so I don't see it happening until next season. Or do you go back to.

You want one of Versteeg, Bruower, or Frolik on the 4th line?

Reminds of the Flames winning the game heading into to the Christmas break in the 14/15 season to end the 9 game losing streak - just has a similar feeling that the weight was lifted for the team.

Backs and Gaudreau do seem to have great chemistry in OT.

Gaudreau - Backlund - Frolik
Tkachuk - Monahan - Versteeg
Ferland - Bennett - Brouwer
Bouma - Stajan - Chiasson

^ Wouldn't mind seeing that tried out one game.

Who said "set in stone"? They looked decent tonight with that combination, why not see if it works for a longer term?

Heh.

He's a lazy bum that doesn't want to shovel out his parking spot, so insisted my other neighbour needed to (unnecessarily) move his car over so his big stupid truck would fit. I was outside with my wireless headphones on and he started bugging me about it so I missed the end

Even go Dougie/Brodie for a couple games.

Blend the #### out of your lines & pairings right now if you can get wins. If not, you're rebuilding anyway.

It's easy to lose patience when someone keeps trying the same thing and it keeps failing.

Gulutzan will have to 4th liner Chiasson permanently if he wants to start climbing the standings.

As much as I'd like to sit Wideman because of Widemangate, Jokipakka and Kulak have been even less impressive. If one of them suddenly takes a huge step forward, wonderful. Until then, those other two will be the ones periodically sat.
