No he's not. That ship has sailed. Neither party is interested in reuniting. The next time you see him associated with the Flames will be when he's announcing his retirement.

Vrbata would be a much better option than Iggy.

I understand why the lines will be the way they are tonight... but man it's going to be rough for Johnny playing on what is now effectively a 4th line.

People need to get over the notion that a team's top six forwards are going to be on the top two lines. The NHL isn't like that anymore. Teams today spread out their top six forwards over three lines. So each of the top three lines will have a pair of skilled players, and then a complementary guy who brings something else to the line.

Well some of the best 1st lines are..
JAMES VAN RIEMSDYK - MITCHELL MARNER - TYLER BOZAK
JAKOB SILFVERBERG - ANDREW COGLIANO - RYAN KESLER
JASON ZUCKER - MIKKO KOIVU - MIKAEL GRANLUND
PATRICK KANE - ARTEM ANISIMOV - ARTEMI PANARIN
NICK FOLIGNO - ALEXANDER WENNBERG - BRANDON SAAD
DAVID PASTRNAK - PATRICE BERGERON - BRAD MARCHAND
Johnny needs real linemates. Not much can be done about it though.
We lack skill on the RW big time.

Thank you for this thread FBI!
I've been saying this for a long time and keep getting the
"Chaisson came as advertised"
"Chaisson has been fine"
"What do you expect?"
arguments every time. Chaisson should have never been put on that line and the decision to keep him there reflects on the coach.

Chaisson has definitely come as advertised. He was advertised as a 4th liner.
Get him away from Johnny

GG seems to have an issue adapting to put his players in a position to succeed. He is starting to turn into Dallas Eakins 2.0. You play to your players strengths, not try and fit a square peg into a round hole.

Been reading comparisons to Dallas Eakins all year and I really don't get them. What are the similarities, they have nice hair?

so Chiasson is a #1 RW (see other thread) and Gulutzan is Eakins? Wow, just ... wow. Gulutzan is on pace for ~42 wins this year ... Eakins only won 36 in all of his 113 (!) games with the Oilers. What's with all the doom and gloom today, have I missed anything?!?

A couple people are mad because Gaudreau sucks lately, but are blaming everyone but Gaudreau.

We've seen Johnny play on the 4th line from time to time this season when he's been double shifted. I have to say, he'll probably be better off with Stajan on his wing because unlike Sam Bennett at the moment, Stajan is an above average face-off man, miles better defensively, so they probably won't be hemmed in their own zone as often and surprisingly, Matt Stajan is the #1 even strength scoring centre on the team right now on a per minute basis. So he's very underrated when it comes to production efficiency.

I think that it is fair to blame Gaudreau for his play. Still, its more complex than him simply under performing. Gaudreau is not an individual effort type player. His individual impact is average. When Gaudreau is playing his best, he makes the players around him Shine. Gaudreau needs quality players to play with. Sure we've seen him play better, but he thrives when he has smart players around him.

I remember reading a Players Tribune piece on this exact thing. The players today have more skill than ever before in a lot of ways but these structured systems kill the fun and creativity out. Here is a link to the article and below is a quote from it. Read the article as its fantastic.
http://www.theplayerstribune.com/mir...hockey-russia/
"The problem is more philosophical and starts way before players get to the NHL. It’s easier to destroy than to create. As a coach, it’s easier to tell your players to suffocate the opposing team and not turn the puck over. There are still players whose imagination and creativity capture the Soviet spirit — Johnny Gaudreau in Calgary, Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews in Chicago just to name a few. However, they are becoming exceptions to the rule. Many young players who are intelligent and can see the game four moves ahead are not valued. They’re told “simple, simple, simple.”"
|
Larionov pretty much spells it out. I don't blame GG's structure but as others have stated Gaudreau needs someone to step up and think the game on his level.
I remember when Huselius was first traded here. In the early days he frequently would pull up and be expecting someone (be it a forward or d) to read him and skate into space. Instead there were guys standing still on the point and the other forwards underneath the goalie waiting for the puck. Programmed. And Huselius would eventually be forced to rim it - which just tuned into a turnover most times. Once Huselius got chemistry with line mates he produced big time.
I see similar things happening to Gaudreau.

I have no idea what Gulutzan sees in Chiasson. Other than size and speed he brings nothing to the table. Low hockey IQ, loses puck battles, average hands at best. He should only make the line up if there is injury. /rant

Honestly I think the problem is Johnny. Even when he was playing with Monahan and Brouwer, two guys that have clicked, Gaudreau is still struggling and doing the same things.
Definitely need a better RW than Chaisson though. Hopefully Chaisson having a half decent season points wise will translate to getting something for him. RFA that needs a new contract but with Brouwer and Frolik already filling the middle 6 RW spots, and Hamilton and Hathaway filling the 4th line, why bother with Chaisson

Is it possible that Bennett's and Johnnys problems could be,more, coach related? Doesn't take much for young guys to lose c9bride,'s if the coaches put them i, situations to fail. Hartley had his faults, but really seemed good at getting Johnny and Monahan to showcase and refine their talents.

If Monahan could play the way he played the last 4 games with Gaudreau we would be fine. Am a fan of having that line with Bennett at RW. Obviously we need another center tho, Jankowski?
