He's not a fourth line guy. Like another poster said he's a top 6 complimentary player and will likely be utilized as such. Either as a 1RW stop gap or to fill Tkachuk's spot if they opt to send him down after (/before) 9 games. Being a right-handed RW, probably the first option. Maybe not initially, but at some point.

Hmmm...how does that oiler fan trade of "yak for Russell, versteeg, a 2nd, and a #6dman" look now in reality?

It looks like real life to me. UFA signing, 3rd, and an echl dman.
At the absolutely worst, we waive versteeg if he doesn't work out.

He was a top 6 comp guy. His game and speed has gone down a notch since those days. Weren't Edmonton using him as a bottom 6 guy for their whole camp?

If he was still a top 6 player he wouldn't be signing a PTO.

I like this signing. Oilers fans seem to think he was pretty good and a lock for their team. We have a huge hole on the top line and I prefer Versteeg to Chaisson on the top line all day

Hudler isn't a top six guy anywhere else either...how many did he put up?

These days you don't just stick your 3 best players on the top line, you often have skilled pairs and then add someone to complement them. I bet he gets a shot in the top six, we'll see.

Vintage oilers.

Dont sign the depth guy and play the rookie winger who clearly didnt look ready in the preseason.

Is this official, or are we going to find out he used the Flames to leverage a better deal from the Oilers?

Kris Versteeg any other team : Bad character guy, washed up, pass

Kris Versteeg on the flames : Character issues are overblown, consistent producer, top line

The Oilers lines and especially their right side is a complete gong show. Through training camp RW depth was seen as Eberle, Puljujarvi, Versteeg, Yakupov and Drake Caggiula. Last three probably debatable order however.

Yakupov was seen as expendable so moved, Caggiula has been moved to center, and Leon Draisaitl is now playing his off wing on the right side, a position I've never seen him in. Saying Puljujarvi has looked okay in camp is a positive stretch but he has a spot because high pick and Oilers.

Versteeg moved to Calgary better and move stable option.

Oilers right wing is a symptom of optimistic training camp depth. Could get real ugly real fast beyond Eberle there.

Most had been pretty impressed with him in the pre-season actually, there are many fans on record saying they wish the Flames offered him a PTO

so there's that

It would be fair if the Oilers sign Higgins now...

He could pull a Stempniak when he went to NJ. Particularly given the players he will have a chance to play with.

One can hope.

I would actually be so happy if Tre manages to snag Versteeg out from under the Oilers. He's looked good in the pre-season, his scoring really hasn't slowed down and I could see him meshing well on the top line.

If he has character issues I'd doubt Chicago would have welcomed him back with open arms.

Rob Kerr thinks Versteeg is on a line with Bennett and Brouwer.
