He runs that risk here with what will likely be less ice time / games played.

I guess he would get Mcdavid to help pad some stats on the PP, but I'm not sure that's enough if I'm him. He runs the risk of ending his career up there if it turns into another tire fire.

Thought about that in this discussion a couple days ago and I think he would. Petey Chai would sell him on all these young dynamic forwards he gets to play and pass to, the PP time he'll get that he won't in Calgary. The potential for a bounce back season and one more NHL deal in the summer is higher in Edmonton than Calgary for Wideman.
This deal makes sense for both sides. If Yakupov is a wash, Flames can cut him loose July 1st.

True, but at least he would be contributing to a playoff team here. 2nd unit PP, fill in top line PP if there's an injury.
Up north he's contributing to a team trying (??) not to draft top 5, who brings players in to ruin their careers.
I dunno. I guess it's a lateral move but I'm still not playing up there if I'm him.

But, but, McDavid!

Wideman would get top pp time and possibly 2nd pair minutes in Edmonton. He wold be arguably their best offensive Dman.
For the Flames they still lack RW depth and as of today they do not have a winger to play on the top line. Chaisson has been horrible and Brouwer looks to have a home in the Bennett line.
Deal makes a bit of sense but still unlikely due to the rivalry.

Don't get me wrong, I would do that trade in a second (I actually *gasp* like Yakupov....)
I guess I would hope Edm brings him in, he scores 15 goals and signs a giant 5 year boat anchor extension essentially handicapping their ability to sign Draisaitl and Mcdavid.
Dare to dream.

Don't want to go off topic, but is Widemans NTC valid after (if) he waived it right now to go to a team. Or once he waives it, is it done for good?
For example purposes only: *If* he waived to go to Edmonton, would he then still have final say where he goes next, or could Edmonton trade him at the deadline, to anyone, without his consent?

I personally would rather have Reinhart over Wideman if I had a choice of dman that can't skate.

I don't think Yak will be lighting it up with anybody, but I can certainly understand Oiler fans not wanting to take the risk of sending him to Calgary and then having that happen.

I think technically the NTC doesn't follow the player unless the other team agree's (and it's usually a condition for agreeing to waive).

Only if it hasn't kicked in yet can they choose not to honour it. Otherwise they still have it.

It would be kind of like a Baertschi situation...the biggest risk about that trade was that he went to a direct rival. It may be like the Baertschi situation where the Flames could offer the best asset in return, and the Oilers wouldn't have too much of a choice.

You're assuming that Oilers management wouldn't act like children though. I would put money on 'cut off the nose to spite the face' before I would bet on the Oilers being pragmatic.

The Oilers may be idiots, but I assume they would talk to other interested parties (assuming there are any) to gauge value.

I'm also hearing from good sources Blues are front-runner to trade for Yakupov not the Blackhawks. No word what Edm would be getting
