You know it would be nice to say that something positive could come out of this tragedy. That it puts groups like the NRA and members of the anti-gun control crowd in an impossible box where they have to admit that in a lax gun control state with cops carrying firearms that this action wasn't prevented or stopped.
It would be nice if the anti-gun control groups and lobby's would have this argument hit close to home that its not just blacks and minorities that are at risk to gun violence, but everyone is at risk to gun violence.
It would be nice if this tragedy created an honest apolitical debate where the realization comes that the 2nd ammendment is becoming a suicide pact.
But instead by tomorrow we'll be getting the same old bs statements by the NRA and anti-gun control bozo's on both sides of the political aisle.
We'll get a tepid response from the government that will quickly get quashed.
And then a few days or a few weeks from now we'll get another major gun violence episode and people will wring their hands and talk about doing something or anything. Then they'll forget about it til next time.
These cops didn't deserve this, not every cop is bad, and I get the anger and separation because of the recent actions by police officers. But the minute that people are willing to separate their humanity to lash out like this against a convenient target is the minute that we might as well give up.

Great comment. This was a peaceful protest, and the Dallas PD were live-tweeting it. If it wasn't for these snipers I doubt it would have even made the news.
Yeah this could be somebody with an unrelated beef with law enforcement just sort of piggybacking on Sterling/Castile to carry out their agenda.
All of my cousins raised in the US, and they all seem alright; none particularly care for guns. As it turns out, people open carrying rifles isn't so common a thing that raising children in the US would be unwise, and when it does happen the majority of open carriers aren't opening fire at cops.
The US is obviously a ridiculous place and gun violence unimaginably off the charts, but at the same time, hyperbole doesn't much contribute to the discussion IMO
I wasn't implying that your kids would grow up to be crazy if you lived in that environment. I meant from a safety standpoint. How could you feel that your children are safe, when citizens are open carrying and concealing firearms in public places.

...cause children are not shot by open carriers in any significant number such that you would have any statistical basis to be concerned. Open carriers are law abiding and aren't the folks shooting people randomly in the street, much less kids.
Obviously nobody should have guns period, but people with valid open carry licenses aren't the ones racking up the body count.

Let's not go on a fear mongering kick. The US is significantly safer than the vast majority of your travel options.
I'm there constantly, never once felt unsafe. This doesn't change that. This is sad and horrible, but don't live your life in fear.
Sure it's safe then other travel options but after weekly reports of mass gun killings, I hate to saying it but it changes it for me and my family. As of right now our trip our to Idaho is a no go.
I love going down there, and am probably what many Canadians would refer to as an American defender. That said, I'm so glad I'm not an American. The sheer divisiveness is scary.
Even funny liberal, SNL Republican bashing bits make me uncomfortable because behind the humour, it shows you how almost 50/50 polarized it really is down there.

CNN just showed an amazing video of the gunfire from a Twitter account: allisongriz
That is intense, definitely a scary place to be. So many gun shots.

This is sad and what's sadder is that "suspect" was legally allowed to carry that gun and it could have very well been what caused him to get shot to death for no reason.
The open carry law is dumb and the gun culture in America is sad.
These cops were doing their jobs and I'm sure weren't proud of the killing that took place but we don't even know if that killing wasn't justified or if it was.

Do whatever makes you comfortable and what you think is in the best interest of your family, that's a no brainer, live your life.
I will just adamantly defend (not that you were painting this picture just yourself) from fear mongering. I understand if you'd rather not go to Idaho (to be honest, I wouldn't go either... safety not related) but this idea that America is some unsafe war zone is a lie.
There IS such thing as overreacting to situations like this.
