That is a valid point. The looming arbitration for Colborne could see his cap hit rise significantly. I do hope we sign him to a bridge deal to prove his ability. Colborne strikes me as a late bloomer that's finally developing. I do expect him to regress, but I'd like to see him for at least one more year and see where he lands.

To me this sends a strong message that this organization is going to be carefully managing the cap going forward, perhaps more carefully than we've seen to this point.
I hope they find a deal with Colborne. And I think they will. He strikes me as a guy that knows there is a good fit and opportunity here - and he's got a very level head.
Personally don't care if Ortio or Jooris or back. Give them the # you can give them, and if that isn't high enough, they can walk.

Arnold just wasn't very good this year, even considering his injury. Way behind Grant, Shore and Elson stats-wise. And you have Jankowski needing some ice time now.

I'd prefer we retain Ortio, but Jooris did nothing for me this year. If he walks, it's fine in my books.

Really? You don't think "waste of skin" is going a little too far? It's not like the guy is Raffi Torres or something.

So any news of Grant?
They could give him top line minutes in the AHL with the promise of being the first center up.
May be being too generous to him. Does anyone else even want him?

Does anyone else even want a 6'2" center with great faceoff skills who was pretty much the best point producer in the AHL last year?
Yeah, I'm pretty sure there's a team or two that's going to tell him he will get a strong opportunity in the NHL.

An offer sheet to Monahan would be awesome. Either it's reasonable and the Flames match so we're done there or it's ridiculous and the Flames get like 4 first round picks.
And what team has the space for said offer sheet? It's not a worry. It will not happen. A contract will be agreed upon and everyone will move forward all happy holding hands and skipping through fields of daisies.

Yeah that one is way more important than any of the RFAs getting released. Just with how many teams are desperate for good centres, and his production and age I could easily see him getting offer sheeted, and sure the flames will match but when you talk about cap management, that would probably be a disaster.

Weird how quiet it's been. If we lose him and Nakladal that's a mark on Treliving.

they made the right move with Colbourne. I could see his arbitration award being over $3.5 million. That is probably another reason even if the flames wanted to trade him nobody would take on Cobourne knowing his potential arbitration #. I think they will sign him for under $3 million. Hopeing for $2.5 million but that will be on the low side.
They can say what they want about Jooris but unless he is signing for maz $800,000 then they will let him walk.
Ortiio is a bit of surprise. I don't think he would get $1 million in arbitration. My thinking is he signs for $600,000 knowing that the back-up job is his or he tries his luck out on the market. Have to think flames have a few options if he won't sign for cheap.
As for the rest not a big surprise. They got a lot new blood coming in and they have only so many spots.

You don't need to have the space today, you can clear it out later so anyone can make an offer.
I gotta disagree on it being awesome. Teams only sign offer sheets in two scenarios, to try and offer more than the original team wants/can fit with the legit goal of stealing the payer, or to screw over a rival cap wise.
Say a team misses Stamkos and goes crazy and offers him 8-8.5 mil a year. The Flames get two first rounders and some other lower picks, with no guarantee those firsts are anything more than picks in the 15-30 range. Terrible value for Monahan.
And if the Flames just match, they've lost 1.5 to 2 million in cap space going forward when market value for Monahan based on Barkov and Forsberg is clearly around 6 mil now.

Wow -- didn't realize there were Josh Jooris haters out there. Made the team despite being an undrafted free agent and put up 12+12 in his first season. Obviously didn't do as well last year (sophomore slump?) but he can still fill a role as a energy guy / PKer. Think Paul Byron, with more size and a bit more finish.
Probably isn't worth the $1M QO but I'm sure we see him resign for $700k-800k or something.

Consider the source, and then just ignore it.
As far as Jooris goes, he was a kid who caught lightning in a bottle two years ago, but I think last year is more like what we're going to get from him. If he agrees to come back at a rate below what a QO would have had to be, then cool. If not, we already replaced him with Chiasson.
Would like to have Colborne back, but the Flames had to make this move. He would have gotten too much in arbitration. Hopefully he signs, but I also wouldn't be surprised if he didn't chase some money.

If they were in the bigs, for the most part they would be getting near league minimum.
No dollars truly being saved here as whoever gets those roster spots will get comparable or more money.
I agree with you about asset management in relation to Colborne. Going down the QO route was going to lead to giving him a contract in excess of his true value. This route allows the Flames to explore getting him on a fair deal for both sides. If Colborne decides not to play ball then Tree should stay disciplined and walk away.
