Your dream goes into a lot of detail then. You're really sick, by the way, as your dream makes me watch very specific and unfeasibly intricate pornography.

Couldn't agree more. I don't know why anyone would want to short change themselves and say it's all over when you die. What if it isn't? Neither can be proven either way.
To me personally it's crazy to believe that all of what we see on earth is from a chaotic sequence of events. Science itself believes in cause and effect. To me religion has been tainted by human self interest. It's really unfortunate.
There's a billion planets in our galaxy and and a billion galaxies with no end in sight. Who are we to think that we are the most advanced in the universe and the only ones. If it is all based on chance, then with that kind of number, the chances are, there's more to life than we think.
I don't see how it's 'short changing yourself'.
If it isn't over, and you appear somewhere else, I doubt there's a gatekeeper going "oh wait, you didn't see this coming? Sorry, no afterlife for you!"
I think mankind is wired to seek out or find hope that there is "something else" Why wouldn't we? Life is a short ride and when we actually face down questions in the Abyss: like eternity, consciousness and mortality, it can shake us to the core.
As I said before, I used to lose sleep over this. I would spend nights on my ipad until 3AM looking for an "answer" I used to panic, thinking every second was one more off the clock...hell even start working out the math (I'f im 32 now that probably gives me 40 years...OH NO!)
Gradually, things shifted. You realize that many of the distractions we let ourselves get consumed by, really mean nothing. Once you come to the realization you are not playing with a net, (ie. an afterlife) you come to appreciate your time so much more.
There is enough quotes out there about death and dying, but when it come to the afterlife, I kind of like Tyler Durdan's quote from fight club, used out of context of course. "It is only when we've lost everything, that we're free to do anything"
My theory is that consciousness is like gravity. It's another dimension that can't be seen, but can be observed and defined. This didn't happen to gravity until some pretty big scientific breakthroughs, thank you Newton and Einstein. So now we really have a good grasp on gravity and how it also effects space and time. However, before then it wasn't even known, stuff just fell and when it hit the ground it stopped. The atheist description of gravity. Or the romantics description is there is this god named Atlas just holding the planet in the air. Gravity is far more magnificent than these other theories.
Human consciousness is like this as well. My theory is the brain is an organic hybrid radio that tunes into this dimension, which is your consciousness. That the ability for mankind (lady kind) as well to consciously choose to create or destroy is a mirror into what we actually come from.
When you see a child born that is mentally handicapped I believe their consciousness is in tact but the radio isn't quite tuned in properly. Much like the television show being beamed into a broken tv, the television show is still there.
There is a lot more to this theory, but I think that quantum physics is on the right track to uncovering the understanding of this dimension. Arthur C Clarke wrote a lot about this in many books and he has been uncannily correct about many things. Interstellar was an excellent example of quantum physics.
The experience of life is organic and does absolutely come to an end, but the consciousness seems to be so much greater and together the collective consciousness is amazing.

How has the discovery of gravity changed our lives. At first probably not a whole lot.
If all of a sudden people knew that there's life after death they'd probably look at life from a different perspective. It's like seeing our lifestyle in Canada a little differently after going to a third world country. Just to be clear I dont believe in heaven or hell, at least not in the traditional sense of fire, pitchforks and brimstone.
There's so much don't know. Why stop wondering when it might make your life a a more interesting ride.

Would love to see Christopher Nolan turn that theory into a movie.

A lot of early discoveries by Leonardo were "thrown out" because at the time they didn't make sense. It sounded ridiculous, witchcraft maybe even. A flying machine. You have to wonder how much has been thrown out now because we don't have the basis or understanding yet.
