As I said before, if Randy Carlyle becomes head coach, then it would remove any doubt as to who's really in charge here. There's only one man who would hire Carlyle to coach his team in the year 2016.

I'm no Carlyle supporter and don't want him near this team, but I wonder if the Leafs being a horrible hockey team had anything to do with those numbers?

A brush up on Todd Reirden:

http://capitals.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=724287

Wooked on the Pens PP to the 2nd best in the league since 2011, then went to work for the Caps where their PP (on ice talent not withstanding) to 5th best this year.

Also seems like a guy that knows how to make his D corps better. Actually makes a great fit for the Flames, I now understand why he is a finalist.

If you read the graph it also includes the Ducks, whose numbers mysteriously rose after Carlyle was fired.

Interesting name. Was an Oiler for a whole 17 games. Was the assistant coach at Bowling Green for a year in 07/08 season. Then was an assistant in Pittsburgh from 2010 to 2014 when he was relieved, but was hired the same day by the Capitals as an assistant and has been there since.

You said stats point to him being a bad coach. Now you are saying stats point to him having a negative effect on possession numbers? Which are you saying?

Also, why is his SC season left off your graph?

Not sure if this has been posted before, but I found this article from when Gulutzan first made the leap to the NHL (with the Stars). Definitely sounds like the type of coach Treliving has said he's looking for.

Quote:
"Even though he's young and hasn't coached a game in the NHL, his strengths are exactly what we need," Nieuwendyk said. "He just gets it. He understands players. He understands how to mesh players and how to get the most from their ability. We've seen that from talking to players who played for him. We were highly impressed with the structure and the style of play, just the bench demeanour of Glen. I think that's going to translate well with our players."
Quote:
The front office knows him well because he spent the last two years coaching their top affiliate, the Texas Stars of the AHL, taking them to the finals as an expansion team in 2010 and back to the playoffs this past season.
Quote:
...his first head coaching job, running the expansion Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL. They made the playoffs in five of six seasons and reached the finals once and the conference finals another time.
Quote:
"I think the best way to describe my philosophy is a hard two-way game that has today's tempo," Gulutzan said.

This post = I like Treliving, I don't like Burke. If something I don't like happens, I will blame Burke so that I can still like Treliving.

What do Gulutzan and Reirden have in common?

Deryk Engelland.

Maybe Deryk Engelland is the new head coach and those two are his hand-picked assistants.

I think the Flames want an up and comer or minor retread with a "have the puck" game plan for sure ... so don't see Carlyle getting that gig.

But the man won a cup, and is well respected in any comments I've heard about him. Not a bad guy to have around if he's not the guy steering the Xs and Os on the bench. Hockey is more than just writing up systems. Bench management wins you championships and he's done that; identifying who's going on both sides, minor in game wrinkles to free up your player or bog down theirs.

So much more than attempted shots on goal counted in a studio in Toronto.

Aren't these the same things? Are bad possession numbers a sign of being a good coach to you? In your opinion a good coach should have bad possession numbers? I'm sorry, you've lost me...

Reirden is thought of as an up-and-comer in coaching circles. Would be an interesting choice for a young team.

Todd Rierden shares his birthday with Doug Gilmour so if he were to be hired, he'd be the biggest Cancer in the dressing room since Jarome Iginla.

He hasn't, though.

Look at how he mismanaged Toronto's blue line.

They bring Babcock in, and suddenly Phaneuf, Gardiner, Rielly all fit well. Before that they were all headless chickens, with second pair offensive guys (Phaneuf) being used as shut down D, and swift puck movers being treated with kid gloves to the point where their best two-way skills were rendered ineffective.

No I don't think so, possession stats are not the be all end all in determining effectiveness. Especially in a league that tracks possession in how shall we say it...........such a special way.

What I will agree with you on, is it would be a very interesting choice for the Flames given the explicitly stated a desire to increase possession with bringing in a new coach, but no, I don't feel that possession stats are a slam dunk on evaluating coaching effectiveness.

Is there something similar to the 5 second rule when your 3 year old kid drops food on the floor that applies to Oiler taint?

Nieuwendyk for the most part was a disaster as GM of the Stars so I'm not exactly sure if that puts Gulutzan in a positive light.
