And not with a huge team either or anything - the style dictated the culture.

He probably wouldn't have been fired if not for Melynk (who is probablly the worst owner in sports). And the Senators teams he coached were not very talented. He could probably do a lot better with a team like the flames.
agreed... i thought MacLean was really good, but sort of became a bit of a tyrant (if rumors are to be believed) after winning the jack adams...he was always thought to be a player's coach before that...

i also think guys like a Stevens or Dineen could be good too.. but since the poll lets you pick one, i felt MacLean holds the least risk.

can't comment on Travis Green at all, other than media reports of him being a riser, but more risky imo... who knows... he could be another John Cooper... or he could turn into Dallas Eakins...

Some interesting names... Dale Hawerchuk, Phil Housley, Wayne Gretzky. Are they more offensive minded coaches too? Ted Nolan's name stands out as well.

I want a coach comes in that can teach the big guys play some nasty hockey, if when we can't beat a team on the score board, I want them to beat up their opponents, and not get push around.

It is a good point, but I think it depends on which perspective you come from.

I don't think it matters so much from Treliving's perspective, as he knows what kind of team his Flames are, and what kind way he wants them to play. It is his job to find players that match it, and also his job to find the right coach for the kind of team he has in mind. I don't think hiring a coach will alter who his trade/FA signing targets would be.

From the FA players, however, I do think it is a huge deal. Some players just won't go to an organization because of a particular coach, and perhaps may not feel comfortable going to an organization with an unknown coach. However, FAs usually go to places that get them a) Cash and b) A chance to win.

I don't think having a coach in place during FA season or not is that imperative, but it is probably helpful, especially if there is an FA available that has enjoyed playing under a certain coach.

I wouldn't worry too much about the coaching search. I think it seems to be going slowly because Treliving is in Russia for the World Championships. That tournament ends in a week, so after that I would imagine he'll probably be prepping for the combine. Then, between the combine and the draft, I reckon we might see a coach get signed. I'll be surprised if we don't have a guy in by the time the draft rolls around.

TSN Treliving interview about Team Canada. Questions asked at end about coaching search. Progress being made.

Sounds like Treliving getting a chance to talk to alot of people about coaches while in Russia which may be helping the process. Doing his homework.

Selection will be made "sooner rather than later".

Moreso he said "hasn't circled a date on the calendar, but with anything, you'd like it sooner, rather than later." big difference to me in that regard.

He also said he'd like it done right than quick.

Funny to think that just over a month ago, only 1% of voters thought Gulutzan would be the coach even though his name was being mentioned in the media. Things can change in a hurry!

To be fair, there were a lot more qualified candidates available at the time..

Would still like to see Lowry brought in to help round out the staff.

I have no idea if Gulutzan will turn out to be great or not, but I prefer him over someone with no NHL head coach like Boughner or Lowry.
