Treliving is very methodical and would have been analyzing this for some time.
Which means he probably has someone in mind as he would have fired Hartley weeks ago if it was his plan all along as I don't see him as the type to fire his head coach and begin a new search from the ground up. The timing does coincide with Boudreau but it's possible he's looking at a coach in the AHL like Travis Green.

Bummer. I really liked him as a coach. Maybe it was a mutual decision?

Press conference at the Dome with Flames GM Brad Treliving at 10am. One year after being named the Jack Adams winner, Bob Hartley is done.
Looks like Treliving flew home to get this done (I believe he was already over in Europe with Team Canada, which is why he wasn't at the lottery). No Skype calls here.

If it is Boudreau, I wonder if that's announced today too?

The goaltending situation last year was as much on Treliving and Burkie as it was on Hartley. But special teams performance was 100% on Hartley.

On the players front, the players don't have to like the coach - but if it is getting to the point that players are hating the coach - then that could factor in as well. This is all speculation, but something was driving this decision.

The one thing I hope gets carried over is the way our D activate on the rush. Please don't turn Brodie into a plug.

I liked him two years ago but "earned another year"? I never quite understood this train of thought. Sentiment isn't worth much in sport, we're not exactly discussing a tactical mastermind here. The stretch pass every time strategy was figured out pretty quickly and it didn't look like what he brought was a recipe for long term success. Combine that with his penchant for infuriating player decisions and a staff that didn't seem to grasp how to coach special teams and he was lucky to be able to finish out the year IMO.

Great guy to kick-start the rebuild but the team was never taking the proverbial next step with him. No ill will towards him, he did what he could but now it's time to try and move up a tier.

Treliving has a connection to Jim Playfair.

I like this move, don't give a rat's ass about him winning Jack Adams last year, he made some stupid decisions that often made me wonder wtf he is doing

Hartley is the kind of coach that lots of players will always hate. Much like Darryl Sutter. They all tolerate such coaches when winning though.

However, a lot of players expressing this in the exit interviews might have pushed the Flames into this decision. Especially with so many key pieces coming up for contract renewal.

As far as Boudreau goes, there is no way the team would fire Hartley in the hopes of landing him. They would already have the commitment if Bruce was the reason for this move.

Wish you all the best, Bob. You were huge in getting this franchise back on its feet.

Thank you for all you've done.

I'm glad he's gone, his method of coaching must have worn thin on the team because they just weren't the same team as the year before. He wasn't working and a change had to be made so I'm glad BT didn't wait around for something to happen and use it as an excuse. Management didn't like how he was preforming so they let him go, hopefully Phoenix fires Tippet and the Flames hire him, I think he'd be a good fit too.

The Ottawa Sun is reporting that the Sens have been granted permission today to meet with Boudreau. I would be shocked if the Flames are able to hire Boudreau that quickly.

My guess is a change in philosophy happening.

Hartely is a good coach.

But perhaps he's not the right coach for what Tree is envisioning his on ice product looks like.

4 1/2 seasons in both of Anaheim and Washington which is pretty much on par with most coaches in the NHL today- but with him he had 8 division titles in that time.

Shelf life has been short but only because of game 7 failures - guy is an elite coach when looking at the regular season.

Only time will tell, and I'll reserve final judgement for when we know his replacement. However, I believe this is a mistake. He was a big part of the culture around the club,

I don't care who Tree brings in, as long as he is able to finally beat the Ducks at home and end the streak I'd be happy with it.

Boudreau demonstrated an ability to be flexible and change when circumstances required in order to still be successful, that looks pretty good on a resume for a young team that's still in flux.

Boudreau always had words of praise as an opposing coach about Flames players, and he didn't have to. You might think it's an appealing roster to coach.
