They can't legally just pull over all traffic and start seeing if you're on the up and up, that's against our rights in a major way. Well, to be fair, they can run your registration/plates (and do) a lot as they're cruising to make sure you're on the up & up on a regular basis.
They just can't search your stuff without probable cause. They are well within their rights to pull you over at a checkstop and if you give them probable cause (smell, admit to ANY alcohol) then they can and will have you submit to a roadside test/blow and give you the full once over.
