For those people worried about the tank, remember that the Flames have 12 games remaining, and 8 are on the road (and three of the four home games are against Colorado, Chicago, and LA). The Flames have been the worst road team in the NHL all season long. The losses will come again, so enjoy the wins when you can.
Remember, even the worst teams in the league win 3 or 4 out of every 10 games they play.

Or instead of trying to calculate our way to better draft odds with strategic losing, why don't they just go out and give 110% on the hockey front, and let the chips fall.
Guess what? We got Dougie Hamilton out of last season's draft after going to the 2nd round of the playoffs. If the Flames don't get a top 3 pick, what is stopping them from trading the pick for an already known player/package?

I'm surprised we haven't see Backstrom even dress as the backup in any game yet.
I bet, at the very least, he'll play one of the games in Minnesota coming up (especially the final game of the season), possibly even both of them.

I figure we also see him in Toronto on Monday.

If it were that easy, teams would do it all the time. It was a pretty moronic move by Sweeney that Treliving capitalized on, we can't expect that to happen with any regularity.

In regards to the game, I noticed D.Hamilton had some more bite than normal. He seemed to be having fun trolling the Jets with little (hard) crosschecks. Jets players were getting so mad (noticed Dano in particular) and Dougie just had his photobombing grin on.
I think he was enjoying having his brother out there. Thought Freddie played well too. Didn't look out of place.

Looks like I stirred up a hornets nest. Didn't mean to do that, but I still stand by my comment that Estradas post was ridiculous and embarrassing hyperbole. I realize of course where I am but cmon.

Winnipeg is a terrible team. To see where they were at a couple years ago versus now, they deserve every bit of criticism we can dish out. I mean isn't their rebuild supposed to be over by now?
|
If you head over to NHL.com, the Jets are in the top half of the league for 5v5 shooting with the score close with 51.55 %. Edmonton 48.44%. So.... ya. Just an FYI Calgary is 4th worst just above 47%.
Winnipeg is a great 5 on 5 team again this year but is being sunk by god awful penalty killing and goaltending. No intention tank going on.

Where was this in November when a spot in the Pacific was within reach. Today? Doesn't help this team a lick long-term
|
Yeah it's weird, where was this level of excitement from Backlund during the season. There have been times when Bennett scored where I thought Backlund looked a little casual during the celebration.

Dare I suggest it, should the Flames entertain the idea of moving Backlund while his stock is somewhat high, maybe at the draft?

No. This team should be fighting for a playoff spot next year and losing Backlund would not help that at all.

Why? We finally have 3 great centres and people are in a rush to dump one? We deal Backlund and guess what we need? A 3rd line centre like Backlund. What's the point?

I wouldn't even move Backlund if we won Matthews. Just move Bennett over and let Monahan and Matthews duke it out (over time) as the #1 & #2 centers.
Eventually you might have to start moving guys for cap considerations, but for the time being I'd love rolling with:
Gaudreau - Monahan -
S Bennett - Matthews -
????????? - Backlund -
Center depth for days.

All this amounts to is the unavoidable conclusion that the Jets are a terrible team, and nothing in Winnipeg seems to change. They are finishing their fifth season back in the Canadian hinterland and are still one of the worst team in the NHL. Outside of a blip in their schedule last year when they went on an adrenaline fuelled tear after moving dressing room malcontent Evander Kane, their performance looks about the same today as it did in 2012.

Looks the same as the 80's and early 90's too. Forever bad, just back to their historical placing.

Yes, well, those Jets are being bad in Arizona. These Jets are back to the Atlanta Thrashers' historical placing.

And they're shamelessly bad? Did you even watch last nights game or did you just check the boxscore? Actually if you checked the boxscore I wouldn't expect such a shallow wrap up. Perhaps you just saw the score on your way to work.

Really? What consolation is shot attempts (not even shots, but attempts!) at the end of the day when you can't beat a half-AHL team on the scoreboard starting an unproven goalie. Making excuses for a rubbish team that's tanking quite effectively with their overall suckiness.
Jets better in the first? A 3-0 start for the Flames begs to differ. It's about execution, son.

Cool. I'll happily take "most complete player in the draft" Pierre-Luc Dubois or "Ekblad-lite" Chychrun as consolation.

We have three great pairs of forwards in the top 9.
Gaudreau/Monahan
Bennett/2016 pick
Backlund/Frolik
Love it. Get good depth guys rotating through to find chemistry and bob's your uncle. Also our D seems pretty set.
Biggest issue continuing to dog this team is goaltending. Huge question mark and test for Treliving. If that issue gets solved this will again be a competitive playoff team next season and beyond.
