I'm about the same height as Johnny at 5'8, and I'm around 155-160lbs.
I just picked up an intermediate 67 flex. It's a lot more fun!

Some of the publicly known NHL player flexes I've come across at the 'Dome or elsewhere on the 'net. But players do change all the time and many will have 3 different at any one time for testing (e.g. 70-75-80).
Spoiler!

Most intermediate sticks come in at about 65 flex, so it's a fair guess to assume that was what Kessel was using. Gaudreau on the other hand is using a 55 flex. This is from a Warrior Brand Manager:

Kaner's using a 102 with moves like that? Insane. I wonder what Burns or Thornton use?

You likely have, but do not know it. Just because people use a particular flex, does not mean it is the right flex for them. Again, personal preference and comfort aside, (yes, I realise that is key) I would bet if a bunch of men's league players were properly "fitted" for a stick, the "best" one would be a lower flex then they are using.

I always used a whip flex when I could still play beer league. Guys always get hung up on having a high stiffness rating as if it is some kind of indicator of their manliness. Me, I liked being able to rifle off a pass without giving the tell of my shoulders flexing. Besides, you might as well let the stick do the work since you're not being paid for it.

I think Brett Hull made headlines for using a 75 flex stick when he was rifling home one timers from the top of the circle.
Hull used a 62 flex actually. His sticks just had the wrappers printed for 75.

It means that at that stick length 55 pounds of force is required to flex the stick to one inch of deflection in the centre of the shaft.

No, he's using a junior flex. If a stick is 55 flex then it can be a 55 flex at whatever length is determined by manufacturing.

That's brilliant, thanks! Now I completely get it. I still had no idea what the numbering actually represented.
