So Bob thinks Russell is worth MORE than 5.5 million per year / 5 years as a UFA.

I think a #4 is essentially a good bottom pairing defender with some skating ability and offense.
If we can get an upgrade on Russell for cheaper then I am 100% for that.
With how the market is I don't see that happening though.
Who would you have in mind? Like the market for Russell seems decent and in your opinion he's a weak #4. Where are these strong number fours that we can get?
We have to fill 2 years before our prospects are ready.

Schlemko. His stats are better (right now). He makes under $1M.

It seems pretty obvious. Flames like him, want to sign him, can't afford him, will trade him.

This team needs to put him on the trade block and start selling. How else are we to keep up with Toronto? Russell should attract lots of interest from contenders and hopefully bring back a 2nd rounder. This team needs to get younger, faster and more motivated. Trade Russell, Hudler, Jones and any one of the goalies for whatever you can get, there will be a massive group of older experienced players that you will be able to get as free agents this summer that can fill roles. Better to accumulate youth, picks and prospects now.

Guys like Mackenzie, Dreger, Friedman, Spector are sure doing a good job of building up Russell's value

No point in addressing that because you're obviously set in your opinion that Russell is a top 4. Just because Hartley has used him a certain way, does not make it universal.

Please don't resign Russell. He is one of those players who looks good visually but is a train wreck when defending. He just doesn't have the size or strength to defend well. He has a really hard time clearing guys from the front of the net. 5.5 mil would be a disaster. He is worth 1-2m.

You guys are nuts.
A 28 year old that's good for 30 points is worth 1-2 Million?
Is there even one example of a UFA defensemen that see's 15-18 minutes that makes under 2 M?

I was half joking, but at around $1M versus $5.5? Hell yeah.
And Schlemko's mediocre year is better than Russell's. In basic and advanced stats. He looked very good on the powerplay I watched last night.
Russell has 14 points and only 1 on the power play, despite a fair bit of time there. Schlemko has 19 and 9 on the power play.
Plus shootouts.
And yeah, he's a UFA who will make less than $2M who sees over 20m per game.

He's pretty much exactly like Ference. Both undersized ideal #5 guys who can play 20 minutes when needed and not look too bad. Guys who aren't skilled enough to run a powerplay but move the puck decently well.
If Russell is looking to get paid huge then we'll move him.

Russell has a tremendous amount of value to a contending team. Chicago gives a 1st in a heart beat to have Kris Russell anchor their 3rd pair.

How the hell is Shlemko leading the Devils defense with 19 points. That's mind blowing. That has to be the lowest in the league no?
5th lowest overall TOI while being on the top PP line(clear 2nd in PP time)
That just screams coaches confidence doesn't it haha. Those 8 PPA are a mirage. Wouldn't want him anywhere near a top 4
That being said he will still probably get 3 million next year.

Player / Icetime / Cap Hit
Ben Lovejoy / 19:10 / $1.1 M
Matt Hunwick / 22:29 / $1.2 M
Nick Holden / 22:03 / $1.65 M
Mike Weber / 16:00 / $1.66 M
David Schlemko / 18:05 / $0.625 M
The worst thing you could do is say Russell plays X minutes and so he's worth Y. Its not about quantity of minutes it's about quality.

His ATOI is reflective of him having to work his way up the lineup. He's played over 20m in 4 of the last 5 games. The fact he is now getting that as a one year UFA making $650K speaks to the coach's confidence - just not how you think.
He also has 3 GWG this year.
eta: I think i was on a bad site - he only has 15 points, not 19. But it still is better than Russell!

He's having a good year? Another inexpensive guy on fire for the Devils is Stempniak.
Let's not forget that Schlemko was a waiver fodder pickup last season. TWICE.
Quote:
In the 2014–15 season, on January 3, 2015, he was claimed off waivers by the Dallas Stars.[3] Schlemko played in 5 scoreless games with the Stars as a reserve defenseman before he was again placed and claimed off waivers by the Calgary Flames on March 1, 2015.[4]
|
3 mil would be crazy. But maybe something close to a 2.6 mil X 2 years would be in the cards for him? (And I'm sure he'd take that from anyone in a heart beat rather than risk going to the minors again)
Russell successfully went through waivers, was given to us for a 5th, received a 1.5 mil show me, then a 2 year 2.6 mil. It would be very surprising to see him less than 4 mil. (hence, trade), but if he got Engelland's contract... I have no idea if that's good or not.
