It's only acceptable if it's a valid reason. I partied too hard and could make it on time is BS.
These guys get paid good money to play a game, and they are in the middle of trying to make playoffs.
They should be held accountable for their actions. Good on the Flames management.

Yeah for people who paid for tickets tonight, this will suck.
But hopefully it leads to a more professional attitude from these 3 that will improve the quality of Flames performance for years to come.

Honestly, I'm pretty laissez-faire on the whole thing. The sports fan hysteria will no doubt take over but they made mistakes, learn from it, move on. Monahan and Gaudreau seem like good young people, doubt it'll be a long term issue.

If Terry Crisp used this strategy in the 80's, most of the Flames legends would have been scratched in a regular basis.
Typically a team will try to keep it's dirty laundry in house, but this has been brewing for a long time. Hartley hasn't had the respect of the room in a long time (the players refer to him as Robert out of dislike) and he's been looking for a way to make a statement. They players made it easy for him to do that today.

Who knows what is going on in the Flames dressing room but would you get scratched for a first offense like this? I wouldn't think so.

All I can is, this isn't the first time I've heard this news.

Did some guys end up at too good a Super Bowl party?
LA Kings had their practice yesterday at 8:30 am according to Elliott Friedman. Reminding their players to keep their priorities straight.

The fact that they all practiced with the normal lines this morning, and this is coming out so close to game time, makes me think this is more a management decision than a coach's one.
Burke has always been pretty vocal about no player being better than the team.

Somewhere in Europe (yet still darkened by Edmonton's gloomy shadow), Auston Matthews steeples his fingers and mutters "goooood....goooood...."

Because that will send the proper message to the team, lets bench them after the incident to appease the fans. They broke protocol, the players have to pay the price.
Give your head a shake man, cheer for the team and stop rustling your jimmies about it.

If it's just being late for practice once, there's got to be other ways to discipline guys instead of scratching them at a really key time in the season.
|
You have to make tough decisions. Monahan wears a letter, Johnny is arguably the best player, they need to set the example. Who knows if this isn't the first offence, and they need to be accountable to your team and fans.
You don't scratch those two guys willy nilly, but I doubt the Flames will ever reveal more, but I doubt management and Hartley do this without some serious thought.

Players have to be held accountable. Irrespective of their name. Again it is always earned never given.
It is a team first sport.

Ha ha. I'm glad I'm not going to the game now. Has this ever happened when three full time players got put in the press box for behaviour? I like it if it's one or maybe two players but scratching your two best players is a real downer for people that are paying good money to see tonight's game.

I get that a message has to be sent, but scratching them makes me not want to watch. Brodie and Bennett are the only two exciting guys left.
Disappointed in them but being late for practice isn't the worst thing in the world. If I had to guess this isn't the first time it's happened.

Add on top of it the fact that maybe they don't hit some performance bonuses if they miss some games.

Yeah but the biggest losers here are the fans that paid hundreds of dollars to watch the game.
Bench them for an away game?

Good move imo.
If they've been unprofessional or have had a series of small incidents culminating in this one, then management is right to scratch them. Disappointing that it has happened, but the team has to set standards and expectations.
Also sends the right message to the rest of the players and shows that accountability works up and down the lineup.

Good. Feel free to go out and have a good time but you better not let it interfere with your responsibilities to your team.
The rest of the team appeared to be at the Super Bowl party to and they all made it to practice on time without a hangover.
Honestly doubt they would have been punished if this was a first time thing either. Wasn't there an inkling of this around the rink earlier this year when Monahan and Gaudreau left practice with the "flu" but there were then pictures of them partying at the Weeknd concert the night before on Bollig's instagram.
