The funny thing is that both sides of this argument are going to lose. We won't make the playoffs, and we'll never beat these other persistent loser teams when it comes to the draft.

Had seats in the lower bowl in the CBJ zone. I made sure to scream "BOURQUE! YOU SUCK!" once a period

Difference is this year has the triple lottery. Now if we finish even 4th-6th we still have a half decent chance at drafting top 3. Ran the simulator a bunch today and 6th last still has ~25-30% chance of drafting top 3 from what I can tell. I'm sure some math wizards can figure it out exactly or maybe it's spelled out somewhere.
People shouldn't be talking about just Matthews, there's a lot of talent at the top end and the lottery will determine the draft order as much as the final standings will. I'd be pretty ecstatic with a top 5 pick this year. Sure Matthews or Laine would be amazing but the guys right after them are talents as well.
Even though this draft isn't "deep" because it drops off fast, the top 5-10 this year is definitely well above average IMO. The year we drafted Bennett there was a clearcut top 4 of elite guys. This year IMO there's at least 5 elite guys.

At least Angry and Drunk Polak wouldn't have Joe Mother####in Colborne on or any where near the ice when the goalie is pulled in a 1 goal game.
Frankly I hope the Flames give it there absolute all every game this season but Brad better make every move he can to maximize trade value of our players and make this team as bad as possible after the deadline.
Still hate the idea of Matthews.

Just watch, Calgary with finish last overall in the first year where that doesn't matter.

Our centre depth is atrocious.
You have Monahan then it drops significantly, Backlund with 5 goals, Granlund with 4 goals, Stajan with 4 goals.
Time to call up Grant
Gaudreau - Grant - x
Bennett - Monahan - x

Still matters. Last place still wins 1st and 2nd pick the most times. And if they fail to win any of the three picks they'd still be 4th.
I ran the simulator 125 times and this is the results. You can see CBJ wins 1st and 2nd the most. EDM as 2nd last also scores a lot of good results. It drops off after that.
Team 1st 2nd 3rd
Columbus Blue Jackets 24 29 14
Edmonton Oilers 20 20 27
Buffalo Sabres 14 17 12
Toronto Maple Leafs 13 10 15
Montreal Canadiens 12 7 9
Vancouver Canucks 10 5 1
Calgary Flames 9 10 17
Winnipeg Jets 7 11 10
Ottawa Senators 7 7 14
Carolina Hurricanes 4 8 4
Colorado Avalanche 2 1 0
Arizona Coyotes 2 0 2
New Jersey Devils 1 0 0
Finishing bottom 2 gives you the best chances by far.

If they could successfully fill out the roster with (by 2017):
Frolik-Bennett- Laine*
Gaudreau-Monahan- Oshie**
Ferland- Jankowski-Klimchuk***
Bouma-Backlund-Jooris
Grant/Agostino
Giordano-Brodie
Hickey-Hamilton
Kulak- Andersson
*or Puljujarvi for more of a shut-down setup
**2017 UFA signing. Or somehow score Toffoli via Kings Cap Hell
***or Granlund or Poirier
That'd be a pretty killer roster, in my opinion.

The top end of this draft is pretty good even past Matthews and Laine.
Puljujarvi is a good playmaking RW
Chychrun is basically a slightly shorter Ekblad
Nylander is a more physical version of his brother
Tkachuk plays like his old man
Gauthier is a quality goal scorer
Sergachev is similar to Provorov (some areas hes better and others he's worse overall about the same)
Dubois looks similar to Ryan Johansen.
A lot of talent, it just depends on what you're looking for. Each of those guys would be a great add to the overall talent in the organization and with how the Flames are playing, it's looking like a guarantee that one of those names will be added.
A worse record just means that we are more likely to get one of the better players on that list.
None of this of course is the ideal, but the Flames are tied for last place with 32 games remaining and are almost 10 points out of a playoff spot. It's not going to happen unless the Flames win 9 of 10 games before the deadline and even then the Flames would still need to win 12 of the 22 games left after that at a minimum. Virtually impossible.
