The Mike Richards and Voynov debacle was the best thing to happen to the Kings. Too lazy to do the numbers to see what they would look like with both their contracts still on the books. But you can bet that they were able to retain an elite #1C like Kopitar because of that. Screw the Kings.

When I first saw this contract I thought "woooooah" But now that I thought about it more, it seems more sensible.

As others have stated, Kopitar is one of the best 2 way players in the league. His points aren´t gaudy, but are high enough when you consider the other sides of his game.

As for this contract running till he is 36, since his game isn´t predicated on speed I could still see him being a very effective player till his mid to late 30´s.

Not really Richards though. Lombardi had a cap free buyout and did not take it the prior year. Now he's on the cap until 2031'.

7x7 for a Bobby Ryan, Dion Phaneuf or 8x8 for a guy like Kessel, these are bad contracts. Because you'll never win with guys like that carrying the mail for you.

When Kopitar carries the mail, the Kings win Stanley Cups. He's worth his money.

At the same point if Kopitar is on the Leafs or Sens he never wins a cup.
