But that is the point, and not to get too OT, Clapton was always best (IMO) in a band.

I would suggest the Jeff Beck is the guitar equivalent of Bowie. Beck was know for doing what he wanted, and seemed to change himself album to album.

Local music leader Kenna Burima is already planning a tribute by local bands. Stay tuned for details.

Not that record sales are the defining point for influence (especially when talking about guys like David Bowie, who went against the mainstream some of the time), but there are some great musicians on this list.

Not a lot of solo acts though.

George Michael
Phil Collins
Rod Stewart
Robbie Williams (was going to suggest him as a joke initially).

I'm going to throw Lennon into the mix. To me, Lennon occupies a pedestal all by himself in British rock because him and the Beatles started it all. His unfortunate death at his prime only helps solidify it.

Anyone thinks Bowie should rank alongside Lennon?

Here is the thing. Does Lennon become the sing writer he is without Paul?

I think there is something to be said for artists that are solo, and really Bowie for the most part truly was solo. He didn't really have anyone to prop him up. Lennon hits a bump he can lean on Paul or George (also a great song writer, if less prolific).

To my mind you can't have John without Paul or Paul without John.

It is a bit of apples to oranges comparison.

I would agree there probably isn't a more influential English solo musician.

This is a tribute video featuring one of my favourite songs of his.

Listened to the new album on my way home from work today, and I might be overrating it in the moment but I think it might be his best work since Low. My only real complaint is his voice is kind of weak, but obviously with context now it adds a new layer to future listens. I'd give it a strong 4/5

After reading some strong reviews a few days ago I downloaded it last night upon being reminded about it when I heard about his death.

I'm really enjoying it after a few listens.

One of his most elegant performances (Freddy Mercury Tribute) that I will never, ever, ever get tired of.

Why can't we give love that one more chance?
Why can't we give love, give love, give love, give love, give love, give love, give love, give love?..

'Cause love's such an old-fashioned word
And love dares you to care for
The people on the edge of the night
And love dares you to change our way of
Caring about ourselves
This is our last dance
This is our last dance

I can't believe both of them are now gone.
