Johnny is a class above Trouba in my opinion. If Trouba ends up anywhere near 8x7, Johnny will surely be getting $9MM per year.
I got no problem with the individual players trying to get as much as they can. After all, they are the product we buy and the NHL sells, and so they deserve the dough the league generates.
This salary cap era though makes me wish players would accept less to be on a competitive team. That in and of itself is a bit unfair, but such is the cap world.

I think Tarasenka is the obvious comp, both game breakers and offensive catalysts... $7M if he's generous, $8M if he's not. $6.75M if Treliving can work the magic he got with Gio and Brodie.
I wonder if Monahan gets $6M over the same term or if he'll give out matching contracts?

I have always been a big Trouba fan and I would be the first to say that he is not worth anything close to 8 x $7m and will not get that.
He can expect something similar to Hamilton's deal.

Center is such a hard position to play. I'm not saying the wing is easy, but I get a bit annoyed at the lack of praise and excess criticism Monahan has been getting this year. Last year he got heaps of praise, and rightly so. This year, with the entire team playing badly, he was still trying to play hockey the right way. Granted, he made many mistakes and was in a "slump" but even during the dark days of October, he wasn't that far off his scoring pace from last season. Johnny is getting heaps of praise again, and rightly so. I wouldn't be shocked if they end up with the same contracts. Johnny's edge in points is made up by Mony's more difficult position.
But Johnny wouldn't have got very far without Mony.
Size.

Hey, anyone know how many RFA vs UFA years an 8 year deal for Johnny would buy?
And to compare, what about Tarasenko's contract? Number of RFA/UFA years?

His agent Lewis Gross (Conroy's old agent) has been silent. I wonder what term Gaudreau will be looking for. I have heard suggestions he is going to insist on a shorter term to drive up his yearly salary, and quicken UFA status. As much as 8 years would be great, I am hearing term could be 3-5 years. His choice. Dollars will be pretty much what he wants.

If he only signs for 3-4 years I will be very concerned that he doesn't want to play here long term.

4 years would make him a UFA. No way in hell Treliving does that.
2 maybe. Or even 3. But 4 is the one term that simply won't be on the table.
I think it's 8 or it's 2.

If those suggestions and rumors are true, then it reads like he doesn't want to be in Calgary much longer.
Having said that though, all the signs point to Johnny enjoying himself, and being grateful that the Flames took a chance on him and gave him opportunities. Obviously it's impossible to know the room dynamics and off-ice relationships, but it appears from tidbits in social media that Johnny gets along with many of the guys, including (and probably most importantly) Monahan.
Furthermore, I don't think many players opt for shorter term if a club is offering long term or max term, just so they can drive up their dollar value in their 2nd or 3rd contracts. That is risky business, even for a budding superstar like Johnny. Injury, drop in play/desire, off-ice issues that lead to a drop in play are all possibilities for any player, including stars. All the mega stars of the league have inked max term contracts. In my opinion, a player would choose the guaranteed salary over an 8 year term if it's offered to him over the CHANCE he might earn an extra million or two over two separate contracts.

Those suggestions and rumours came from one guy, with no quoted or reliable source.
Probably just a butt-hurt Oiler fan and hardly a reason to be concerned that Gaudreau doesn't want to be here.
Especially considering everything we've seen from this kid so far - he loves being here and being a Flame.
Remember too, if he really didn't want to be here, all he had to do was listen to his mom and go back to school for another year.

In all seriousness, you could use Hall as a comparable and dangle a 6x6 to Johnny.
Tarasenko is the better comparable, but still.
