Did this change? The team he was claimed from use to have first dibs!
Or am I confusing the baseball rule 5 draft!
Either way, if he wasn't good enough to beat out our 2 crap UFA goalies, I don't care whether he is claimed or not

No way he gets claimed IMO.
For me it's not as much about the waiver issue. Flames need to look at their approach to developing goalies. This guy seemed to be on track generally but went through stretches of bad play. And I can only imagine he simply did not look good in practice this year. Much of that is on the player for sure.
But Flames have a pair of high quality goalie prospects in the system. I hope they are looking hard at how they plan to develop them.

I have disliked the way Ortio was handled from the get go. I, in now way feel he was the saviour but I thought he could have been a quality NHL goalie. No games and limited practice time is now way for anyway to find a grove. I know people think he was handed the ball but when you haven't really touched it in 6 or so months? Come on...
I doubt he gets claimed. The AHL is the best place for him right now. He gets a chance to play everyday and doesn't have to be a part of the crap fest that is calgary's defense right now. i call it a win for Ortio.

Ortio hasn't been good in the times he's played. If he was NHL ready he'd be playing right now. I shutter to thing what our record would be if Ortio played the 12 games. I hope he get claimed by a team in front of us, that might give us a chance to catch up in the standings.

He had 2 games. God forbid a 25 year old goalie has 2 bad games when the team is playing it's worst hockey in franchise history.
This could blow up in our face.
How quickly you all forget how well he played last season when the team in front of him wasn't hot garbage.

Yeah, it was only two games. That's why I'm saying it's okay if he just goes to the AHL for another month-season whatever, not jettisoning him to the moon, polak. Calm down man.

The bigger mystery is why Hartley is unwilling to give Ortio another shot. Yes, Ramo was playing better, but Ortio's two starts were against two of the better teams in the league, at a time when our team defence was hot garbage.
I think the amount of time we've invested in him, and more importantly, his performance last season, warranted more than two starts this year.

Why not? One of the teams outlined earlier with injuries to their goalies might view Ortio as a stopgap with potential. The same thing TB did with Poulin, only he's worse than Ortio. No reason a team like that to not take a chance especially when he could just be discarded like Poulin was once they don't need him. Or maybe he puts it all together for his new team and they get an asset for free? No risk, some utility, possible reward. Good chance he gets claimed IMO.

I hope he clears...
Assuming that his practice performance was not confidence inspiring, hence the lack of starts, then the best thing for the player is to go down and work on his game.

So if he goes down what is the 1/2 goaltender situation in Stockton?

This is really making me start to get on the 'fire Hartley' wagon. Sitting Hudler and not giving Ortio any starts while he continues to force Raymond into the line up and not sitting Wideman or Russell is the last straw for me. He is starting to lose the room I think and he may be past his best before date.
Treliving is really starting to have the shine wear off too. Sure he got us Dougie Hamilton which was a good deal but his signings have been lack luster and re-signing Ramo was a HUGE mistake coming into the season. Just bad asset management.

I don't understand how he was handled at all... for a young goalie ice time is everything development wise. First he sits a month then gets thrown into the fire while team infront is playing bad and is only given two games? The guy isn't even in game shape let alone has enough experience in the league.
Never should have signed Ramo.

This. He needs to play plan and simple. I am not sure the club is writing him off as some on here (twitter) seem to suggest. He's been good if not very good everywhere he has played and this year is so screwed up for the Flames that I can't anything they do seriously. I bet he clears and gets back to playing everyday and then we can judge him again.

Except we're exposing him to being claimed which means it was a calculated decision that if he gets picked up then "o'well".
That is what I disagree with.

I think we lose him unfortunately. He played well prior to his injury last year and someone will probably take a flier on him.
