I don't think the Oilers will want to give up the Isles asking price. They are too in love with their forwards.

I would prefer to trade Russell before Wideman, but then again the NYI probably want Wideman over Russell. I wonder though if because the Islanders GM is having his hand forced if he doesn't mind which D-man it really is so that he can get the trade over with and it is not affecting his other players minds.
But to add on all that Wideman has an NMC so it all depends on if he would waive or not.
And the hard part is judging Wideman's value (Top 5 in points for D-men in 2014/15) and how much Hamonic means to the NYI (Young RH Defenseman on top pairing for the Islanders). Depending on both those things, Flames might have to add or maybe even a straight up trade.
But If we were to trade Russell I 100% believe the Flames would need to add based on Russell being a LH shot and less of a point producing defenseman.
Dennis Wideman
2015/16 20GP 0G 8A -11 +/-
2014/15 80GP 15G 41A +6 +/-
Kris Russell
2015/16 20GP 1G 2A -10 +/-
2014/15 79GP 4G 30A +18 +/-
Travis Hamonic
2015/16 19GP 0G 3A +5 +/-
2014/15 71GP 5G 28A +15 +/-

I don't think it would be a problem to get Wideman to waive his NTC for the Islanders but they would surely want a better return.
Gio could make sense if we retained 1M, not that I want to trade him but it would seem like a reasonable deal with Hamonic being on such a sweet contract.

If Russell would agree to a sign and trade of sorts I could see him being a good starting piece to get it done.

Russell's value is in his cheap paycheck versus his significant ice-time. Wideman's is in his points, with his salary being a drawback.
I'd trade either in a package with a forward for Hamonic.

If the Flames can and want to get out of that Gio contract this is the time to do to. Full NTC in 2016-17 until 2019-20 makes things much more difficult when this season ends.

I would trade Russell+Wideman for Harmonic. Also why would you want to keep Wideman over Russell. Flames would have Hamilton, Harmonic, Wideman, Engellend all as right hand shots with Brodie wanting to play the right side. This leaves Gio and Smid as natural lefties.

Also just a thought. We all know the aisles love that risky prospect/player with insane ups die but several questions that doubt their ability to make it (Kabanov, Ho Sang). I wonder if they would have interest in Kylington as part of the return? Russell+Kylington? They could probably re-sign Russell to a similar cap hit as Harmonic with a prospect that has elite potential?

Trade whoever you need to apart from anyone under 25 on the roster.
Brodie needs someone to play with in his age range.

I think Winnipeg gets him. It isn't that out of the question that they offer Byfuglien for Hamonic. Pretty attractive for both sides (under the assumption NYI feel they can re-sign him). Seeing how Byfuglien is american, it could be attractive to him.

I'd be ecstatic if we got Hamonic for any combination of Russel/Wideman +. I just can't see it happening though. Isles are in win now mode and not trading their version of Brodie for a downgrade plus.

Why?
I mean, it'd be nice if Hamilton was more of a finished product to play with Brodie now but beyond that?

I as well. Eat 50% on each contract (Isles still have an internal budget yes?) throw in a prospect to get it done, End up with a Gio, Hamonic, Brodie, Hamilton top four, call up Kulak to play on the bottom pair call it a good day at the office.

The trading Gio talk is so unrealistic IMO
The guy lead the flames to a magical season as Captain, had the Norris wrapped up until his injury and has come back from his injury at below average.
It has been a 20 game sample size vs the 70 or so we saw last year. Perhaps after missing that sort of time it is taking him longer than most to re find his game. I have been as frustrated as everyone when it comes to his play on the ice however trading you Captain who has the full package in terms of on and off the ice for Hamonick is a not a trade the flames consider
