Flames literally lose to Blues 4-3
Backlund with 8:28 TOI. Yikes.

Gaudreau was determined to tie the game there again. Got I think two shots on target late, but one was too sharp an angle, and Elliot was in good position for the other.
I bet he's actually pissed he didn't tie it up tonight. That fire is what makes me think it's a good bet he puts up eye popping numbers this season.

- I don't care what advanced stats say, Kris Russell is a really good player. He's undersized, but is so good defensively, and battles hard for the puck and usually comes out with it despite the size disadvantage. I don't think he gets enough credit for how good he is. Love Wideman's offensive game, but defensively, he's a bigger anchor than Engelland and yet, Russell still props that pairing up in the defensive zone, that just shows how good he is. He's also really good offensively, is overshadowed by the other defensemen.
- Bouma replacement may not necessarily be Granlund. If they want the same type of player, Hathaway was also one of the last cuts and is described by the Flames as a Bouma clone. Wouldn't be surprised if he got the call up instead. Especially since the next game is against Winnipeg. I'd expect Ferland and Bollig in for sure, and maybe Hathaway in as Bouma's replacement. Also wouldn't be shocked if Backlund got sat out and Jooris replace him for the Winnipeg game.
- I wouldn't say the Flames had that good of a first period. They were thoroughly outshot and Hiller made some big saves. If it wasn't for the 4 powerplays, the Blues would have dominated that period.
- Put me in the group that wants to see Ortio in next. One of these goalies has to show they really want the no. 1 position. Can't say that Ramo or Hiller have done that yet. Should be Ortio's turn to show what he has.

It's amazing how much we're hurtin' without Brodie. Also, I think we're missing Colborne in a big way. Gotta grind out some wins until those guys get back.

I see people piling on Backlund here already, but what I'd like to know is what he did that was so bad during game 1 that Hartley instantly relegated him to babysitting Bollig on the fourth line for 8 minutes a game.
Really, was Backlund any worse than anyone else in the season opener? Even tonight I thought he was trying to get things going, working pretty hard with the 8 damn minutes he had to work with while trying to keep Bollig above water. How is it possible for Backlund to be tossed straight into the dog house like this each and every season?

Also, Sam Bennett is looking fantastic. Time for him to put up his first point of the season against the Jets.

I think something is wrong with Backlund (perhaps playing through an injury?) as he had no acceleration on the break away goal against and played it pretty casually almost like his stomach muscles wouldn't allow him to stretch or dive.
Granlund looked great all training camp and had 1 goal and 2 assists in his first game in Stockton so maybe he can force himself back into the lineup with a good offensive showing. I'd like to see him center Ferland and Jooris next game and hope the chemistry takes off. Or like many have been calling for see how he does as a winger.

Ugh, poor Colborne. Totally forgot that broken thumb. Bouma appears to be out for a good long while now too. Leaving the Dome on Crutches and a protective boot.
Backlund is healthy finally to start the season and this is how he plays? Man I feel for the guy but he needs to lock it down and start playing like the Backlund of two years ago.
Hamilton needs more time. Nothing else to say. Hartley says 20 games to figure it out. I'll take that info and use it before I make any rash proclamations.

Backlund was hurt briefly in camp again, maybe the injury is lingering because he looked bad out there tonight, just like he did before he went out for a month last year.
Granlund is likely going to get recalled either way due to Bouma, but Backs might need to sit as well.
I think this may be the last season that Backlund is a Flame unfortunately because you can't have a guy that is always hurt and can't win faceoffs as your 3rd line center. That isn't to say that he should be gone just to move him, but he would be a useful piece in trade, and having both Granlund and Arnold (plus Jankowski next year) makes it possible that you could move him without harming the team too much.

It's one game lets not overreact. It is also game three. Top line looked great. Wideman and Russell who everyone on here said were defensive busts played decent. Frolik was good. Chill we have 79 to play.

Just another reminder of how hard this league actually is to win in. Can't take a moment off and still be competitive. A lot of exciting hockey in that game though.

I haven't read the whole thread, but there are a lot of complaints about the second period. Rightly so, but I also have a beef with the first.
Four PPs, the majority of which were brutal and we still get outshot 14-7. It was a fantastic pushback in the third but we are going to have a stinker of a season if we perform like we did for the first forty.
I'm confident we can turn it around, but we really need to do so soon.
Lastly, I liked Hiller in net, I'd start him again.

Team just looks rusty to me. Positives: thought Russell, Frolik and Bennett had their best games. Hiller was solid with both long shot goals being flukey screens. Looking forward to getting Granlund in the lineup.

Was happy to see them competitive against St. Louis. They are a good measuring stick for how the Flames are progressing. If they clean up the second periods and bury one of their five chances in the third it may have been a win.
