32 year old Mark Giordano will still be on his old deal but yes I agree with what your saying.

I'm hoping him starting his career late will help with his aging down the road.

They're paying 32 year old Mark Giordano $4M.

This deal doesn't start until 2016-17.

As long as Gio isn't complete crap during the last couple years I don't see it being a huge deal. We might be overpaying by a couple million but it's the price you pay to keep him at a reasonable price for the first 4 years. As long as he is still a top 4 and contributing then it is what it is.

Pumped to see that our captain has signed for another 6 years! Great role model and leader. #welldeserved

Year longer than I was hoping for but probably about the best deal we could realistically get. Great deal short term, shouldn't be too bad long term.

OP needs to keep the thread title updated.

The only concern i have with Gio are the injuries. He's such a smart player, I think If he can stay healthy, he's the type of guy who can continue to be effective into his 40's.

I see a few people talking about it being frontloaded. That doesn't matter does it? I thought the AAV was the cap hit for the length of contract.

He didn't start his career late.. what does that even mean?

He played junior, played in the AHL, played his first NHL games at 21 then played half a season at 22. He wasn't drafted and his development curve was wildly different then most NHL players and can be considered a late bloomer but he didn't start his career any later.

The fact that he established himself as an NHL player a little later (24?) doesn't mean he didn't wasn't playing hockey anywhere prior to that.

Throw out whatever false hope you have about this weird idea.

What was Gio doing before making the NHL, a 9-5 cubicle job?

I could be wrong but I thought there was some rule where we couldn't sign them to extensions yet. Certain time period had to pass or something.

It doesn't matter to is really, no. You're correct about the cap only being affected by AAV. More curiosity than anything

Being the physical specimen that Gio is, and that he was a late bloomer that wasn't so beaten up in his early 20s, I don't think longevity into his late 30s will be too much an issue.

Really like this deal.

This is what happens when reasonable people get together and have a discussion based on mutual interests and opportunities.

Giordano is now guaranteed to to be employed for another seven years at a handsome but not ransom salary. A good deal all around.

His story provides inspiration. He's progressed from struggling to find an interested NHL team, to earning a position on the team, to one of the best leaders and defencemen the team has had.
