Well you really don't want Gillies and Ortio taking away each others playing time in the AHL so something's gotta give up here to free up some playing time.

If it's needed Gillies can go down to Glens Falls. Lots of good goalies do time in the ECHL.

Why does everyone assume that it will be Ortio who would be waived? My bet is that Hiller gets traded this summer but, if not, it wouldn't surprise me to see him demoted to the AHL.

Put me in the camp that doesn't want to see Ortio go through waivers. No guarantee at all he would sneak through. Don't want to lose a good asset like that for nothing.

Neither Ortio or Hiller would be waived as it's likely both would be claimed. It's pretty obvious the Flames will be moving Hiller between now and the start of the season. The one positive of going with Ramo is that Ortio will likely see more action than he would behind Hiller as Ramo's lows are lower than Hiller's.

I appreciate the sentiment, but I'm sure a more honest answer would have been "My agent looked for the highest dollars on the longest term, and when it was clear that the goalie market had fallen out, I signed a one year deal in Calgary".

This is a great signing and gives the Flames better options in goal come training camp. The cap hit isn't significant.
I feel better with a Ramo/Ortio combo going into the year than Hiller/Ortio. Ramo seems to keep improving ever since coming over from the K and really gave us a better chance in the Anaheim series. Hopefully with Dougie joining the D corps and Gio re-signing it will help with our defensive coverage.

Ramo seems to play his best when he has legit competition. We saw that in his first year here when he was just okay with MacDonald as his backup, and then he really got better when Barra started to get some starts later in the season.
Same thing last season, with Ramo and Hiller battling for the starter job. My worry with Ramo/Ortio is that with Ortio having a slow start to the last two seasons, would Ramo be pushed how it seems he needs to be to play his best all year long?

I think there will be a number of teams that will want to acquire a goalie like Hiller to solidify their tandem. Buffalo and SJ spring to mind. Yep, they both gave up a 1st in order to get what they felt was their potential starter, but I can't imagine that they would feel 100% comfortable in having them as starters without a capable veteran netminder to back them up and step-in if things go south.
Like Bingo said, retain 50% of Hiller's contract, and suddenly Hiller becomes a very attractive piece for a team hoping to solidify their position in net. Without looking, there are probably a number of teams that look at Hiller as an attractive option from that standpoint.

I think it's almost a guarantee he would be claimed. Say no to waiving Orts!

Fact is that goaltending is an issue. It's a ticking time bomb.
Hiller, Ortio and now Ramo have one year left on their deals and as much as y'all like Gillies, backstoppers is the big issue going forward.

I'm not opposed to this signing, but hard to be excited for very average goaltending at a combined price of $8.3M+, even if it's just for one season.
No wonder Treliving was/is looking at other options.
