The thing that I am most hopeful will work out is the improved defensive AI.
In real hockey, if one player makes a mistake defensively, teammates will try to accommodate that by covering for him if possible. I agree that if a player makes a mistake, it should have consequences. However in NHL 15, it felt to me like AI teammates were useless defensively.

And lacks the immediacy of the previous generation commentary - it's often several seconds delayed from the action itself.
That's not crucial to me (things like that are very far behind gameplay for me in terms of importance) but it does sound awkward, like it's two generations out of date.

While the commentary doesn't do much for me, I'm sure on day 1 a computer controlled teammate will take a tripping penalty, Eddie Olczyk will call me lazy, and I'll rage-mute them both.
I played the newest EA Fifa game, it was lightyears ahead of EA's NHL. Best of all was that you could actually pass it to the players you wanted and the players had somewhat of an intelligence. They wouldn't do completely moronic things and it felt like playing real soccer.

As much as I love FIFA, that would be a huge step-up from recent years. I can't count the amount of expletives I've yelled over the years when I've attempted to pass to one player and the game instead sent my ball to a completely different player.

One of the biggest problems with NHL this year was the nerfed and neutered manual passing. The same problems were cropping up in 15, and I miss so many great scoring opportunities because I pass to the wrong player despite my best attempts.
It's also very frustrating to press the switch player button and switching between 2 players that are completely out of the play.

Or you hit "O" to try to do a standing tackle, and then you get the ball, and proceed to launch it into oblivion because for whatever reason the button press needed to carry over from before you had the ball once you got it.

Try Tweaking your gameplay assistance settings, I use Semi-Assisted.
Manual Passing I find I get the same issue as you, as you have to be pointing DIRECTLY where you want to pass, which is tough when you are running one direction and wanting to pass another.
Full Assist is lame as it often passes where you dont want to and I find I lose possession a lot more.
Full assist is too easy when it comes to through passes. Makes the game almost trivial with wingers with pace.
I enjoy the FIFA game a lot more than NHL for a number of reasons. Small polish in things like the game, better GM/Be a Pro (even if it's still way behind compared to NBA) and the game play is enjoyable when you want to execute a playstyle even with all kinds of issues like rubber banding, etc.
It shouldn't be harder to do something in a video game than in real life. I find the passing in the NHL games frustrating and would prefer if it were more intelligent. In Madden games you get a cone, FIFA has auto directional passing as well as more intelligent power correction to ensure the pass goes as intended.
I'd prefer better passing and dman intelligence so that simple plays like passing straight ahead or picking up a loose puck should be way easier. That way strategy, teamwork and intelligence are the essential elements as opposed to unrealistic errors that change a games direction.
