That still raises the issue of whether officials should be deputizing players (LOL NOPE), obviously, but that's totally separate.
It'd be nice if everyone kept their heads on their shoulders and their feet grounded in reality in this series. This kind of sensationalism makes me cringe.
|
It's not histrionics. I've never heard of an official doing that ever. Not once. Maaaayyybe during the 70's where giant brawls were out of control on a regular basis, but no official in the NHL has ever been heard to do this in the last 20-30 years. It isn't a stretch to assume he was lying if it's never occurred before and the officials aren't available to comment. It's not sensationalism, it's a logical conclusion that he wasn't being honest in order to avoid a suspension for being the 3rd man in. He probably wouldn't have been suspended anyway, but I have no doubt he was making that up to justify his actions to the media. Engelland said he didn't hear anything like that, so it becomes increasingly hard to take Hamhuis at his word.
I really don't care if he lied or not, but it ruins his reputation for me. I doubt I'll believe his point of view on any incident going forward.
Edit: forgot that Dorsett was the one that came up with the excuse, so I guess it's him I won't be believing going forward. Hamhuis is still complicit though.

Calgary Comic Expo - all the Klingons and Romulans are likely tying up traffic!

|
Because it is entirely possible that Hamhuis independently chose to restrain Engelland when he saw that his teammate was in trouble? Even in this scenario, he was still the third man in, despite the fact that he didn't throw any punches. In such an event, it is still a far cry from responding to an official's instructions as has been claimed.
What I find troubling in your handling of this is how much weight you commit to your perception of the video footage. The video images themselves are products that are widely open to interpretation. There have been other posters' equally valid interpretations of the video record (including the visible distance from any of the referees that Hamhuis finds himself at the moment that he moves to engage with Engelland; a situation that quite reasonably calls into serious question Dorsett's explanation for the events) that you have flatly dismissed as "histrionics."
It's arrogant and shortsighted.
I agree that you might be right about what happened (although I highly doubt it in light of the total absence from the history for any similar incidents of player deputisation). But what you seem to fail to acknowledge—and have even cast disparage upon—is the notion that you might be wrong. The problem here is not with your argument. It is with your seemingly incredulous response to criticism.

It's exhausting. When Calgary won game 1, all you saw on my facebook feed was a "wooooooot, great game, glad I stayed up" and that's about it.

A girl I know had her account suspended because she was textually abusing people on Facebook after game two. She used lots of sexual preference insults and the like. A status I posted after game two was riddled with insults and belittlements from her. I ended up deleting her after that, but my wife still has her because her life is generally a train wreck and it's kind of hilarious to follow once in a while. Turns out she "borrowed" her friends account and started cursing out Facebook for deleting her account.
Delicious.

For the record, I do believe that the deputisation excuse originated with Dorsett, not Hamhuis. For what it's worth, it seems all the more far fetched coming from a third party to the event in question.

The best part about the way Ferland is playing is the answer Vancouver has for him.
As in they don't.
That right there is the reason Vancouver will never win a cup with this lineup. They may win a series or two, but but when push comes to shove they're a bunch of wet-ends incapable of controlling a rookie 3rd liner taking liberties every time he's on the ice.
Can't wait to see him dummy Bieksa at some point.

Kassian would be the answer if he were healthy. Back problem is keeping him out of the lineup and I'm just fine with that.

Because they are Canuck fans. I lived in the Fraser Valley for 8 years and it was incredibly frustrating to deal with Canuck fans. I do have some great intelligent friends who are Canuck fans and can have rationale conversations with them but it seems they have a disproportionate amount of fans who fall in the assinine category.
Must frustrating in the 90's was talking about the flames when they had great teams and the comment was always ""they Suck" or "Fleury sucks" and I would say they don't suck you hate or dislike them but they are a 100+ point team but they don't suck. The constant response was always back to you suck and other imminently intelligent comments with no connection to reality.
They have a huge section of the fan base who are bandwagon and just come on board for playoffs and simply don't follow hockey enough to speak intelligently about it and have Canuck blinders on.

I think it is ok to razz each other on Facebook, but when it crosses the personal line then yea people need to cut that junk out. I actually have fun posting some pictures on Facebook about Canuck fans being terrible rioting fans, the team playing dirty, the empty seats in the first few games. I get razzed right back from a few of my friends. I think it is hilarious, but I do know some people are so hyper sensitive they will be offended by anything other than "good luck, hope the Flames win"
I did already have one friend come on and pull that PC junk. I told him to chill out, I am not calling names, keeping it about the team not the person. I see no harm in that.
I know not everyone has that tact though. Some people don't realize playoffs end, and you still have to be friends with people after. However, looks like the person you mention above has bigger issues that she has to deal with.
