yup. Also a great way of addressing needs in the prospect pool ... the Flames are still quite thin on right wing (Smith, Carroll and Harrison are all at least a couple of years away from being NHL ready), so signing a prospect like Baun would be great.

Even if we miss out on Baun, it's fantastic that Calgary can compete for the biggest college UFAs this year. Signing one of the top defensemen like Morrison would have been impossible for Calgary only two years ago. The Flames have made HUGE strides over the last couple of years in every possible way.

May as well sign Matt O'Connor out of BU while we are at it and get them all.👍👍

Baun must have inside knowledge that Treliving is planning on moving them out.

Another benefit started by Feaster. After he took over as GM the Flames have been mass inviting college guys to their development camp to help build relationships. Paid off with Jooris. Paying off again.

McKenzie on NBCSports says Blackhawks, Red Wings, Flames, Jets and Oilers are the front runners for Baun.

Well, that's not a very narrow list at all. I guess it's good to be in the top 5.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Colgate's Kyle Baun, sought after UFA, likely to take tonite before deciding where to sign. CHI, DET, CGY, WPG, EDM amongst most interested.

I said it in another thread-we should wait and snatch Mike Reilly away from CBJ and Minny. Defense rebuilt! LOL

Baun is probably keeping the Oilers in the mix just to build up negotiation leverage against legitimate teams.

If his only leverage is "I'll go sign in Edmonton instead!" then I feel really bad for him...

No one would take that threat seriously because no sane person would follow through on it.

No need to "wait"

Why not both?

CHI has some RW that would slot ahead of Baun. DET could sign him. EDM.....

I figure it'll be down to CGY and DET. Lineage says DET, homer side of me predicts CGY.

if you're looking for a quick and easy way to make the NHL, the Oilers are an interesting option. Hell, a guy like Baun probably steps in immediately as a 3rd line winger on the Oilers roster without much of a fight.

It's a weird short list though. Two stable powerhouses, two upcoming young teams ... and the Oilers.

if part of our deal is that he plays NHL games this season and jumps the queue over guys who have developed under the "always earned" mantra, i'm against it.

You'd think his agent would remind him that Edm is where careers go to die.

WPG I suppose is another solid option too. They have some players coming up. Well, at the very least we should be happy the Flames are in on Baun. Hope he signs with the Flames.

Sounds like he is going to sleep on it and then make a decision. Likely hear something tomorrow morning at the earliest.

Very interesting. I will attempt to remain indifferent until tomorrow. Nice to be in the mix for FAs again. Even if they are unproven college ones.
