Darling/Raantta are a good tandem, they can easily trade Crawford for futures and/or depth players to a team desperate for goaltending (SJ for example since Niemi becomes UFA iirc).

Thats still a pretty sizable contract to move out without taking any money back.

dear god... Chicago is picking up all the ELC UFAs.
How can Chicago not be penalized by the league if they are getting into the mix prior to June 1st?

"in the mix" likely meaning that Chicago is one of Reilly's preferred destinations. doesn't mean they contacted him

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
U of Minn D Mike Reilly, playing for USA at #WHC, informed CBJ this week he is going to explore UFA market but CBJ still a consideration.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Reilly has insisted on multiple occasions he isn't ruling out CBJ but he does want to field offers/opportunities from rest of league.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
BTW, Reilly officially de-registered from U of Minnesota this week, which means he officially becomes UFA 30 days later, in mid-June.

Flames have already started recruiting:

Jon Gillies @JGillies32
hey @mreilly93, heard you're going to UFA...has anyone told you about the girls in Calgary? oh, and the city is great too #GoFlamesGo

The Flames prospect cupboard is stocked with NCAA talent. Jooris is a prime example of a college free agent getting a chance in the NHL. For a young player looking for a chance Calgary is a good place to be right now.

I always wonder what these guys truly value. I have a feeling he also ends up in Chicago. I get it. Who wouldn't wanna play for a perennial contender? But is there a true opportunity to make the team? Maybe the way they look at it is that going forward Toews and Kane will be making ALL the money and the Hawks
will have to rely on youngsters to fill out the lineup?

They're losing Roszival, Oduya and Timonen as well. So he arguably gets a better opportunity there than anywhere else.

Isn't Reilly originally from Chicago as well? That might factor into his decision as well. Plus it's a good organization that has developed some good defensemen.

Yeah Chicago makes more sense unfortunately. They need good players on ELC's as they are going to struggle with the cap

I had heard that he was born in Chicago actually and moved to Minnesota at an early age (7?). So probably no major connections to Chicago since he would have grown up in Minnesota I guess.

And a team in the rise at that with lots of college kids. That should count for something

I'm not seeing it if I'm him. I'm seeing a team that excessively relied on a 33 year old vet for some reason that can't really be quantified or qualified other than gut feeling, while the only prospect that got to play made his season debut int he last game of the season, and only played in the playoffs because three defensemen were unable to play.

It's Reilly okay, we can get in this one without worrying about the Hymen.

That was a different one. A Florida draft pick.
