Funny, over the last few years every time I saw a Phoenix/Arizona game it seemed like Schlemko was in the lineup. Looking at his career stats, he never really stuck with any nhl team full time though.

For what's it's worth, I remember that he played well and was even frustrating at times. Unless something happened that made his game fall off significantly, I think we'll wind up with a better player than we expect.

Only thing I'm concerned about is that he was born in Edmonton, just like Deryk Engelland, and we all know how that turned out...

I wonder if Hartley tries Schlemko with Russel (the old MH pairing back together) and slides Wideman down a spot to play with Engelland.

I like this pick up. The guy is an NHLer and is likely no worse at all than a Smid, Engeland or Diaz. and we got him for absolutely nothing. Whats not to like?

Good pick-up. Look forward to seeing how he does.

He also seems to be a 12 way defender. That's a lot of ways.

Decent pick-up. Nothing flashy, but he's pretty solid.

Any ideas for new D pairings?

Russell Wideman
Schlemko Brodie
Diaz Engelland

OR

Brodie Wideman
Schlemko Russell
Diaz Engelland

OR

Russell Wideman
Brodie Diaz
Schlemko Engelland

Braydon Coburn come on down!

We'll probably be dressing 7 D until Gio comes back.

Brodie - Wideman
Schlemko - Russell
Diaz - Engelland
Potter

It sucks that Wotherspoon didn't get ice time, but he got practice time in with the team. And the organization would want him getting top minutes in Adirondack vs about 10-12 a night as a #6-7 defenceman with the Flames, even if he is ready to burst into the NHL.

I know someone will come out and say he's a top 3 defenceman because he's an 80 overall or something. Good pickup for sure, but still probably a depth defenceman for the rest of the season.

Perhaps he's invented a whole new play style nobody has seen before. He has so many ways to defend, you don't see him coming! Dave "The Ninja" Schlemko.

With all the trades and signings the last week or so, the awkwardness of TDL Day on TSN will be compounded lol.

It's funny how they hype it so damn much, then all they do is recap each trade 47 times.

At the risk of painting this with too broad a brush. . . .

I don't see how a waiver wire pickup solves any problem for Calgary - they don't have a lack of guys who can play 12 minutes per night on defense, they need someone who can reliably play 20 minutes per night.

(And yes, I'm aware Schlemko played 18 per night in Arizona, but his waiver status indicates to me that he didn't do it reliably).

I wonder which two D-men the Flames ship out tomorrow if they acquire an upgrade before the deadline. Far too many cooks in the kitchen at that point.

Can they find a home for Diaz and Engelland if say they manage to get Coburn?

Sounds like the near-term approach is to spread the minutes. So in that case he can help, and probably more than a guy like Potter. If you can put him out there 12/13 minutes that's 4 minutes more than Potter just skated.

They needed another body for depth and they needed to do it before tomorrow. BT is hedging his bets here, there's still a chance he'll push for someone better but if that doesn't work out, at least he got Schlemko. Sutter would have killed for a Schlemko in 2004 when he was forced to play Brennan Evans in the playoffs. You can never have enough defensive depth going into a playoff drive.

Are there? Serious question, are we running out of contract room? Otherwise, don't think we have close to too many cooks in the kitchen, this organization lacks Defensive depth and lacks enough top 4 talent. Fair enough eventually we will have to weed out the gluten of 5-7 D-men we have and make some choices, but is there really urgency to do this prior to the offseason?

Clearly he didn't impress anyone in Dallas.

But Treliving knows him as well as anyone, and sometimes it just comes down to whether the coach trusts/likes you and how he utilizes you.

A fresh start, with his buddy Russell, and with Treliving's support could be the break he needs.

No risk in trying.

Yup like Fire of Phoenix says, this is Treliving hedging his bets.

Grab someone off the waiver wire but still try to address the D via trade up to the deadline.

Recall that Sutter did something similar in 2009 where he picked Nycholat off waivers and the very next day traded for Leopold. Nycholat was the insurance if a trade for Leopold didn't materialize.
