Myers, Kane, Stafford
Three names that have been in the rumour mill non stop for the last three years finally get moved

Stafford might help them a little bit, but I don't think much of him as a player. I consider him of equal impact to somebody like Raymond.
|
Is Bogosian that much better than Myers? Myers is coming to fill his spot on the bottom pairing. Something I think Myers can do.
Stafford is not anything great but he is going to help more than Kane could for the rest of the season.
I like the trade for Jets because it helps them a bit this year, and gives them 2 solid prospects and another first in a deep draft.

With the names involved in this trade, I'm glad the Flames stayed out of it.

Prospects are fine and dandy, but the Jets needed a equivalent player to Kane coming back. They are done re-building and need to start winning now.
They needed to make a Turgeon for LaFontaine deal, not this.
Buffalo wins this IMO.
|
They deluded themselves into thinking they could somehow get a Kane equivalent (minus the problems) who is healthy and ready to play now for Kane. Why would any GM trade an effective player with no attitude issues for a talented, yet injured for the rest of the season, player who's a known disturber of the peace? It would be a terrible move.

Buffalo was really the only team that could pull this trade off given the sheer amount of 1st overall picks they had accumulated over the past few years. They could easily part with a first round pick while most teams with only one pick are going to value that pick much differently. Also due to being bad for a while they had accumulated a lot of young prospects that they could part with. In a way the Jets really got lucky that there was a team like the Sabres that could look past Kane's issues seeing they don't have any team chemistry worth maintaining.

What kind of return were you thinking the jets could get back from a player that really didn't want to be there?

Myers also has a NTC/NMC that kicks in next season

It's awesome when people make stuff up and suggest that Calgarypuck has a singular opinion.
Great post.

They got better and only time will tell how much. Stafford isn't a game changer but he can contribute and it's going to depend on how long it takes Myers to settle in but because Bogosian has been hot garbage for stretches this season it's hard to imagine that Myers will not be an immediate improvement.

I think Buffalo won this trade. Next year they'll be able to ice Kane, Eichel, Reinhart, girgensons etc.

Slight edge to the Jets in the short-term. If Kane finds his game in Buffalo (and there's no reason to think he won't line up with McDavid or Eichel next season), big win for the Sabres. Because I have my doubts Myers will be an upgrade on Bogosian.

I think we will see Myers consistently scratched by the end of the season.

and the Bennett for Kane rumour is dead as well - Hope that wasn't for real in the first place.

What people would want/not want the Flames to give up is not the same as what they expected Kane to land.

It wasn't ever a rumour, it was what Bob MacKenzie speculated the Jets would want from the Flames for Kane.
Either way it was complete madness.

Stafford is big, so he fits their style and he can score. The rest doesn't help now. Chevy has his eyes down the road I think
