It's MEMORIAL Drive. Should it be a dump to honour fallen soldiers? Good God.

You prefer he speak in the third person when expressing his opinion?

Druh has a vision and fights for it hard. She takes huge amounts of abuse publicly, but she does what she feels is right regardless of political consequence. Easy to respect.

I guess the more I think about this, the less I care. Plenty of people have a drink with their meals from time to time. I am of the opinion that a glass of wine or two with dinner doesn't impair peoples judgment or ability to do work. A lot of businesses allow employees to have a little Baileys in their coffee in mid-late December and things are fine. Some companies bring in beer and wine for Friday afternoons and as long as people act like adults there are no problems.
I do think that allegations of getting smashed or using illicit drugs are another matter though. Thats pretty serious, and if the mayor or Farrell have evidence or know of this, they ought to be naming names and providing the evidence. If these things happened a long time ago, why did it take so long to come out? You would think that if this was a serious concern it would be more immediate than some Christmas party 3 terms ago where one person had too much to drink.

This I had to LOL at. This is like a scene in a move where a guy starts to rant, the crowd is like "Yes! Testify!", drops another example, "Amen!", then says something ridiculous and you hear the needle scratch.
I'll let you know Peace Bridge included what my favorite part of Memorial Drive is. It is a little brown sign that spells exactly why we do these types of projects. You should take a drive/walk eastbound sometime read it, and think about your comment above.

3 under-qualified, inexperienced councillors ran in the last election and won based on their "unwavering" support of not heeding to wasteful spending, raising taxes or basically doing anything that costs money. Sounds great right? Well, unfortunately that looks great on a billboard and doesn't translate perfectly to real life.
What these individuals are starting to realize, is that regardless of campaign slogans, people in Calgary expect first class city services and infrastructure. So they're at a constant crossroads with trying to maintain what the platform that they ran under with trying to preserve their 'fiscal hawk' nature.
Ultimately, what ends up happening is a bunch of circular talk, very little contributions to council meetings and opposing anything that can benefit Wards outside their jurisdiction.
It's truly maddening.
Sean Chu is probably the best example of someone who should never have run for municipal politics and who is so far in over his head it's almost comical. Having watched numerous council meetings, he truly resembles a 7 year old at the parents dinner table.
Let us not forget that this was his proposed solution to traffic in Calgary (something that has not yet been invented):

I don't remember any public conversation or clammering by the general public, requesting the peace bridge, blue rings etc etc . I think you have special interest pressure confused with what the public expects for services.

What is actually disgusting is the naming of wasteful projects in the name of fallen soldiers to try to sell it the public, as some sort of honor..

I will gladly pay taxes to honor those who served. Memorial drive is a beautiful nod of respect to their memory. You are cold.

Well then call me self serving. Council represents its citizens, and I wholly support honoring veterans along memorial drive. I am glad they chose to honor veterans in this way, just like im sure many veterans appreciate Memorial Drive as well.

Same here, but my only issue is that fact that they didn't go far enough. They had to rebuild the whole riverfront around the Centre street bridge because of the flood and pretty much made it look exactly like what it was before....which seemed like a wasted opportunity. I was hoping they would do to the pathway on the north side of the river, to what they have been doing on the south.
And speaking of which, the Memorial Drive pathway east of Centre street, all the way to the zoo, really could use some love. Widening, better lighting, sound barriers from Memorial, etc. It's a real dog at the moment, and now that the St Patricks bridge is open, it needs some focus.

I did a lot of the work on the Landscape of Memory project, so I'm probably too close to the project to speak objectively, but I'll always be amazed with the crowd that will only be happy when their city is filled with grey boxes for buildings and is devoid of anything beautiful. I'm especially amazed when those people believe they're actually in the majority.
Honestly, you people are selfish Luddites who don't understand that the majority of people in your city would prefer to live in a world class city. If you want to live in a city that resembles Winnipeg, just go live in Winnipeg.

Yeah, I think using money to improve the look of the city is pretty wasteful. I liked the drab look of some of our areas. I hope that Macleod from Glenmore and north continues to be a hotbed for porn stores and shady pubs. In fact, I just want the whole city to look like Ogden.

dont necessarily disagree with memorial drive, but if the idea is to honor the vets, could we not use the money more effectively? how's about throwing a few bones at horton and kensington legions to help them improve their revenue stream (both are under pressure from developers). or throw some at a federal lobby to convince harper to not cut another 2.9Bs from the budget this year?

In that case, what are those tall-grass looking reeds that they planted near Poppy Plaza? I really like the look of those, and would love some in my yard, but have no idea what to look for.
