Based on your criteria, the best breed for you is not-a-cat.

Here is my suggestion: a pet rock. You can even keep it in the garage.

Good one, Minnie. It's not for me, though.

Get a plush cat, it fits your criteria.

I'm probably going to get piled on by a few here for this, but the biggest suggestion I have is to train it to be an outdoor cat from a very early age.

You can throw it outside if people who hate or are allergic to cats come over, they're more active and fun then some lazy house slug, and you never have to worry about "the cat getting out" because they can find their way home.

I'm in this exact scenario. I don't go out of my way to be mean to them or anything, I would just rather not have them.

I'm not against outdoor cats per se...in the right environment. I don't think Calgary is a good place for outdoor cats - they get lost, fight with other strange cats, hit by cars, eaten by coyotes. On a farm, outdoor cats make more sense to me.

Or spend their free time ####ting in my yard.

An outdoor cat is OK in the country, but in the city they are a nuisance

City agree, but if you live in the country, acreage or farm, they are useful, and only destroy your property.

Only in areas with a bylaw.

IE: urban areas.

Yeah, the entire city.

In Calgary, the Responsible Pet Ownersip Bylaw states that cats must not be "at large". This means they must be confined to their owner's property. The easiest way to comply with this bylaw is to keep cats indoors.

BTW, I owned a cat in Calgary, I know the bylaws.

I was BTC. I have no issue if you want an outdoor cat and there is no bylaw, and it isn't going to damage other people's property.

Outdoors cats are terrible. I hate cats and I hate when one of my neighbours, or a stray, cat get into my yard. I wish I had a bb gun for times like that.

Ok I'll bite. Talk to The Meow Foundation. Give them your criteria of what your family is looking for and they'll find the best match. They also let you foster the cat for a couple of weeks to make 100% sure it's the right fit. They expect the cat has found its forever home but would gladly take it back if you found there was a problem such as an unknown allergy or the temperment just ended up being wrong.

Meow is great! Only problem is that Sliver has deemed rescue pets like those from the SPCA and Meow to be "a bit gross." If he applies for one, I sure hope that he includes a link to his thread on putting down a pet when he bores of it.

Yeah, to be used on the irresponsible owners who just open their door and illegally let their cat roam the neighbourhood. Not the cats fault the owners do this.

Estimated to kill approx 275 Million small animals a year in the UK.

Stick a bell on it.
