And that's just during his 10 minute segment on HC@Noon where him and Pat go round and round arguing only to realize that they are saying the same thing...at which point they start arguing again about the thing they just agreed on but going into such minutae that just bottles the mind...

Nothing is worse than the guys who do Bostons broadcasts.
A Bruin will mug a guy after a clean hit, just absolutely jump somebody and the announcers are commenting about what a great player the guy is. I've never heard a worse pair of homers ever in any sport.

Peter was the best pbp guy Ive ever heard period. I remember muting the tv to play the radio. When everyone agrees you know hes a gem. Wills I like because hes a a bit of a homer.
EDIT just to add to that what made Maher so special was his nuetrality. Whatever team was scoring he had enthusiasum more than most.

I don't mind Derek Wills. He's no Peter Maher of course, but I don't expect him to be. I really like Loubo as a colour guy though. After getting used to his voice, I love his insights and junior hockey knowledge.

Too stiff, and his tonal ups and downs on drawn-out explanations bothers me considerably. He should switch jobs with the guy in Adirondack for a couple of games on a conditioning stint. He wouldn't even have to pass through waivers.

I used to like him until someone mentioned the Kermit the Frog thing, now that is all I can hear. I could not do a better Kermie if I tried

Pretty good hire. Tough following a legend. He has his own style and that's ok. When I listen to pbp on the radio, my #1 concern is that is that the PBP voice cant help me visualize what is going on. where is the puck, where is it going, whats the flow etc. He does a very good job of that.
Mark Steven, Stamps radio pbp guy is an example of someone that, IMO, is terrible at this. it can be eg 2nd down, 8 yards to go. Hands off to Cornish, and he goes outside, evades a tackle. Then you have to wait 15 seconds to here where the ball is spotted, did he get a first down etc. Drives me bananas.

His pre-game analysis is burbling homerism, and he doesn't say much that isn't blindingly obvious. But his game-calling is competent and professional.

That's just how things roll in Boston in general. A lot of people with anger issues.

He's getting better. Play by play is good and I can see him being great some day. Talent is there and that is part of sustaining a long career.
Opinions are a fine line, I think if you got a beer or two in him he'd have some interesting things to say. Discretion is there, and that might even be a bigger part to having a long career. LOL
I miss the independents. Toth and Lownsbrough (sp?) 2&7 Sports @ 11 were awesome.
Search Lownsbrough's hijinx on google groups calgary ROFL.

Also disagree, what a weird comment because I see the total opposite. He seems super positive and enthusiastic about everything. He is really passionate about hockey and brings life to whatever he does.

In general though, I like Loubardias, and I like Wills play call and analysis, but I hate hate hate how he calls the goals themselves. Instead of calling the goal or big play as soon as it happens in an excited voice, he slows everything down and does that weird drawn-out thing.
I think what's missing though is a cold hard realist like Mike Rogers or Doug Barkley were, who can give you the real truth once in a while instead of always trying to find the positive. Both of these guys feel a bit like company men. I guess it's not surprising since King was part of the interview process, but I find the homerism a little disappointing for a sophisticated market like Calgary.

I think he's very good.
I find his goal calls fine and on time. I must be missing this delayed, stiff call thing. I like that he's not super excited on a goal. Isn't that one thing generally people liked about Mahr? As in sometimes a goal would be scored and you wouldn't know which team scored it for a while? And I like the defending on the left etc, is great visualizing for people - I don't think most people would know.
Loubardias....not as big a fan. I find his interjections sometimes ramble and get off topic/on tangents. His timing also seems off. But these aren't end of world complaints.
Are they mahr and rogers? No, but I think that's a good thing. The flames have done a pretty good job in getting their replacements. Kudos for that.
