Learning discipline is part of a player's development. I'm sure the coaches will be stressing this with him going forward.

Well when you are going to sucker punch a guy, it's best to do it when he is not looking. It looked to me that the guy turned his back and tried to run away.

Better this be his biggest flaw than something like skating.

It's also a side effect of his greatest strength which is his tenacity and compete level, so it's not all bad. But for a short tournament against less physical teams like the WJC it could be seen as more of a negative, like it supposedly was for Poirier

Bennett is on a different level than Poirier, so if Canada wants to make the mistake and not put him on the team, then it'll be just another one of the many mistakes they've made over the last handful of years.

Well said, C4L. I think both players will learn to channel the aggression for the good of the team.

yup. I'd rather have Bennett and Poirier taking a couple bad penalties and getting under other team's skins than floaters who don't stand up for themselves or their team. They show passion which isn't something that can be taught.
Also I think that guys like monahan and gaudreau who are so smart, calm and collected can help balance out our team dynamic.

Did Bennett meet expectations, or disappoint a little? I'm getting the latter, from reading CP (I did not watch). Got the same read from the prospects' camp too. Hmmmmm.

He looked like he needs another year in junior to round out his game. Considering his age, that's not too surprising. He also showed flashes of why he was considered a candidate for first over all, we just have to be patient with Bennett.

The short time he, McDavid and Fabbri were on a line together, it was absolute magic. None of them were killing the play, good passing and decision making and ALOT of scoring chances. Once the penalties started I don't think all 3 played together again, and since 90% of the team was playing like ####, Bennett couldn't get a whole lot going with his subsequent linemates.

I thought Bennett looked really good in the last two games.

Tough to jump to conclusions with no information of your own, so you rely on those with tiny sample sizes to do so for you?

I think he got injured half-jokingly.

We need to remember that Bennett is the youngest kid on the team after McDavid. So it's not a surprise he wasn't dominant.

Seems like it is something Bennett is fully aware of and working on:
Quote:
Sam Bennett illustrated the concept of a double-edged sword on Thursday.
"I was just a little too aggressive on my stick, I should know better and I wasn't happy with those two penalties in the first," said Bennett, who variously with on left wing alongside Buffalo Sabres top pick Sam Reinhart and also worked in at centre. "Personally I think I came out a little slow, I was upset with myself after taking those penalties. I got my confidence back and the team found a way to win."
|
Benoit Groulx also suggested the referees weren't sharp, which I also agree with:
Quote:
"I thought Sam was good tonight," Canada coach Benoît Groulx said. "He was better than he was two nights ago at Concordia. He was playing with way more confidence. His effort was good. I'm happy with Sam tonight.
"When you talk about penalties, maybe we took some bad penalties but I thought also it was maybe the first game for the referees," Groulx said when asked about the Flames hopeful's three minors. They were — I don't want to blame them — but I thought some of them were doubtful."
